Germany secure place in World Cup knockout stages after coming from behind against Ivory Coast
The German team won an important 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast this Saturday (20). The clash, valid for the second round of Group E of the World Cup, saw the African team open the scoring, but striker Deniz Undav, coming from the bench, shone by scoring the two goals that ensured the triumph and Germany’s passage to the knockout stage.
Classification scenarios after the result
Although Germany is classified, group leadership is not yet guaranteed. The team has six points and could be surpassed by Ecuador, its next opponent in the final round, who will still play a game against Curaçao following this second round.
On the other hand, Ivory Coast needs to score in its match against Curaçao in the subsequent round. This is the condition to try to reach, for the first time in its history, the knockout phase of the tournament.
Field performance analysis
The German team controlled possession throughout the match, but faced significant challenges in penetrating the opponent’s defense. After six minutes, the first clear chance came from a well-aimed cross from Kimmich to Havertz, culminating in a great save from goalkeeper Fofana.
The Ivorians relied on counterattacks throughout the match, with emphasis on Diomandé’s attacks on the left side. However, German superiority was evident, with Musiala and Nmecha creating dangerous shots. Pavlovic found the net in the 21st minute, but the goal was disallowed due to an infraction committed on the Ivory Coast goalkeeper.
In the 29th minute, the Ivory Coast team capitalized on their best opportunity to take the lead 1-0, through Franck Kessié. A new move developed on the left flank with Diomandé, who beat Kimmich and sent a low cross to Diallo. Inside the small area, the number 15 had difficulties controlling it, but managed to finish. The ball, blocked, was free for midfielder Kessié to finish on goal.
Havertz evened the score, but the referee signaled a foul at the beginning of the play. Despite constantly maintaining possession of the ball in the offensive field, Germany did not create any other decisive opportunities before the end of the first half.
The final stage saw an intensification of German pressure, culminating in Undav’s equalizer. In the 26th minute, after a well-executed cross, the striker finished with precision, placing the ball in the back of the net and sparking hope of a comeback, something crucial for a team that seeks to erase its history of recent early eliminations in World Cups.
In the final moments of the match, specifically in the 49th minute of the second half, Nmecha made a brilliant pass to Undav. The player controlled the ball unmarked inside the area, turned with agility and finished, securing the second goal and the turnaround.
