3.2 magnitude earthquake hits region near Salton Sea in Imperial County
A 3.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded in the southern portion of the Salton Sea, located in Imperial County, overnight Sunday. The information was confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately six miles northwest of the city of Calipatria, also in Imperial County, at around 8:26 pm (local time).
The region where the geological event occurred is known for its instability, having been the scene of more than twelve tremors in just 24 hours in May. This part of California, close to the San Andreas Fault, is often seismically active, which explains the recurrence of small tremors.
Due to the recurrence of phenomena like this, the Californian government advises its residents and tourists to download the State Earthquake Preparedness Guide.
The local administration’s official page reinforces that, for those who live in or plan to visit areas susceptible to earthquakes, preparation is essential. This is justified by the fact that such occurrences can arise abruptly and unexpectedly, with little or no advance notice.
