Apple has revealed that watchOS 27, its latest operating system update for smartwatches, will no longer support five previously released Apple Watch models. The decision aims to optimize the user experience and ensure the proper functioning of new advanced features.
The company confirmed the compatibility change after the presentation of watchOS 27, attracting the attention of owners of older devices. The measure affects a number of popular models on the market.
Apple Watch models affected by watchOS 27 update
The new version of the operating system will not be available for the Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7 and Series 8, as well as the 2nd generation Apple Watch SE and the first generation Apple Watch Ultra. This interruption in software support marks an important point in the company’s update trajectory.
In a recent interview, Cait Dooley, Product Marketing Manager for Apple Watch and Health, clarified that compatibility was one of the central discussions in the development of watchOS 27. According to her, the goal is to always provide the best experience possible, which sometimes requires discontinuing support for older hardware.
See below the complete list of models that will receive watchOS 27:
- Apple Watch SE (3rd generation)
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Series 10
- Apple Watch Series 11
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch Ultra 3
Despite the cut in software compatibility, Dooley emphasized that users with older models will still be able to pair their watches with iPhones running the latest versions of iOS. Additionally, these devices will continue to receive important security updates, ensuring protection and basic device functionality. One point of debate among the community, exemplified by user comments, is the difference in Apple’s approach, as iOS 27 for older iPhones offers performance and battery benefits even without features like Siri.
The main justification for the decision lies in the need to ensure that innovative features, such as Siri with artificial intelligence and the new touch gesture, operate optimally. These features require superior processing power, only present in the latest Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Ultra 2 and later, and SE 3 models.
New features arrive with watchOS 27
watchOS 27 brings a series of innovations for users. New features include Siri enhanced with artificial intelligence and its own app, a dynamic app grid for more fluid navigation, and significant improvements to Exercise Partner, elevating the physical activity monitoring experience.
The watchOS 27 developer beta is now available, with a public beta scheduled for release in July. The official arrival for all users is scheduled for autumn in the northern hemisphere.
