The four-part documentary series Marília Mendonça: Sentimento Louco claimed the top spot among the most-watched productions on Prime Video in Brazil after premiering on the streaming platform on Friday (16). The biographical work reconstructs the life and career of the late singer and songwriter Marília Mendonça, a central figure in sertanejo, Brazil’s most popular country music genre. Built from private diaries, home recordings, and previously unreleased testimonies, the production revisits her trajectory from her early songwriting years to nationwide fame.
Researchers and filmmakers assembled a vast digital archive extracted directly from the artist’s personal mobile phone and computer. This collection encompasses 530,000 photographs and 50,000 videos, alongside private WhatsApp voice notes and text messages. To contextualize the personal footage, the crew recorded approximately 100 interviews with relatives, close friends, and music industry professionals. Featured participants include her mother, Ruth Moreira (known in Brazil as Dona Ruth), her brother João Gustavo, singer and former partner Murilo Huff — father of her son Léo — as well as the sertanejo duo Maiara & Maraisa, Zezé Di Camargo, and Paula Fernandes.
Structure of the four episodes and creative team behind the Prime Video production
Available in the Prime Video catalog as an Original Prime release, the series was directed by Susanna Lira and produced by the companies Chatrone and Kromaki, with Amazon MGM Studios as co-producer. The screenplay was written by Valentina Castello Branco, Gabriela Altaf, and Fabiana Assis. Each of the four chapters focuses on a specific stage of the singer’s personal and professional life:
- Episode 1 — Versos Para Corações Partidos (44 minutes): covers her musical beginnings, homemade compositions, financial struggles, and efforts to break into the male-dominated sertanejo market.
- Episode 2 — O Peso da Coroa (49 minutes): details the recording of her debut album at age 19 without an audience, her first live concert, a second album performed before 45,000 people, and a grueling travel schedule.
- Episode 3 — Em Todos Os Cantos (42 minutes): examines the toll of touring on her health, the execution of the itinerant project Todos os Cantos — which drew more than 1 million people across Brazil — and the discovery of her pregnancy.
- Episode 4 — Nossa Herança (50 minutes): portrays the birth of her son Léo, record-breaking online concert livestreams during the pandemic, the collaborative project As Patroas, and the fatal plane crash.
Backstage revelations on the hit song De Quem É a Culpa? and songwriting disputes
Previously unknown backstage episodes appear throughout the documentary, including the real-life inspiration behind the hit track De Quem É a Culpa?, released on the 2017 live DVD Realidade. The song stemmed from a brief romantic involvement between the singer and photographer and audiovisual director Flaney Gonzallez. In her interview for the series, singer Maiara, who performs alongside her twin sister Maraisa, remarked on the fleeting nature of the romance: “I think she hooked up with him once”.
The episodes also reconstruct the end of the artist’s friendship with the songwriting collective Seu Hit, a group from the state of Ceará formed by Vine Show, Vinicius Poeta, and Junior Gomes. The rift occurred in Manaus during the recording of the 2017 DVD Realidade, triggered by a misunderstanding over royalty payments. Recalling the disagreement in the documentary, composer Vine Show stated that the singer told the group at the time: “So now I am everybody.”

Early family support in Goiás and the licensing agreement with Amazon
Born in the municipality of Cristianópolis, in the central Brazilian state of Goiás, Marília Mendonça became her family’s primary breadwinner at age 13. At that time, a music management office in the state capital, Goiânia, hired her as a songwriter on a monthly salary of R$ 3,000. Facing household tensions and scarce financial resources during her childhood, she frequently repeated a phrase to her mother, Ruth Moreira, that is quoted in the documentary: “You are the mother and I am the father”.
Before arriving on the streaming platform, the documentary series held an advance screening at the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival (Festival do Rio). The four-part title marks the first major release under a licensing agreement signed between the singer’s family and Amazon. The technology and entertainment company describes the deal as its largest investment dedicated to preserving the memory of a Brazilian artist.

Timeline of career milestones and upcoming biographical releases through 2027
The agreement with Amazon and parallel cultural initiatives encompass multiple projects scheduled across museums, publishing houses, and streaming catalogs five years after the artist’s death:
- 2017: Release of the live DVD Realidade, recorded in Manaus, featuring the track De Quem É a Culpa?.
- November 5, 2021: Death of Marília Mendonça at age 26 in a plane crash.
- October 16, 2026: Official premiere of the four episodes of Marília Mendonça: Sentimento Louco on Prime Video, following its preview at Festival do Rio.
- November 15, 2026: Scheduled publication of the biography O Rastro da Rainha, written by journalist Carol Prado.
- 2027: Expected premiere of the fictional biographical film Marília on Prime Video.
In addition to the streaming series and an exhibition on display at the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) in São Paulo, journalist Carol Prado’s book O Rastro da Rainha examines how the singer stopped releasing her own compositions after the 2017 DVD Realidade to avoid public speculation about her private life. On the audiovisual front, the fictional feature film Marília — directed by Dainara Toffoli and written by Carina Schulze and Patrícia Andrade — wrapped filming in September 2026 for its 2027 release, starring Goiás-born actress Marina Versos in the title role alongside Hermila Guedes, Klara Castanho, Sophia Valverde, and Marcelo Serrado.
