Dustin Poirier, renowned former UFC fighter, was arrested last Sunday in the state of Georgia on charges of being drunk in public, according to official records of the incident.
The initial information about the incident was reported by TMZ, and later corroborated by Damon Martin, from MMA Fighting, who confirmed the athlete’s arrest on Sunday night and his subsequent release at around 10 pm, following the time zone of the east coast of the United States. To date, the exact motivation and details of the arrest remain undisclosed.
The 37-year-old veteran, who has already finished his career, made his first court appearance the morning after his arrest.
Dustin Poirier’s retirement announcement after the BMF belt dispute
Poirier’s retirement was announced in July 2025, shortly after an epic clash for the “BMF” belt against his former opponent, Max Holloway, in a fight that headlined a major event. On that occasion, Holloway emerged victorious by unanimous decision, and Poirier symbolically removed his gloves in the octagon, indicating the end of his career in the ring. Over the course of 41 professional fights, he built a respectable record of 30 wins, 10 losses and one “No Contest”, in addition to having won an interim title in the lightweight category and contested the straight title on three occasions.
Over the course of a remarkable career in the UFC, Poirier has racked up significant triumphs over heavyweight opponents, including double wins against Holloway and Conor McGregor, as well as overcoming names like Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez and Anthony Pettis, among others, in both the 70kg and 66kg divisions.
Despite frequently expressing nostalgia for the competition, the fighter did not show concrete signs of a possible return to the octagons.
Penalties for public drunkenness in Georgia law
Under Georgia law, public drunken conduct constitutes an offense that can carry penalties ranging from up to one year in prison, a fine of up to one thousand US dollars, or a combination of both sanctions, depending on the severity and circumstances of the case.
The fighter has not yet officially commented on the arrest. However, in a post on his Instagram Stories on Monday, he shared a cryptic message that read: “I love you all. I’m working on myself.”
