Illumination announces Not Alone with Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez in an adventure with cute aliens
Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez will form a duo in “Not Alone”, an animated film focused on extraterrestrial beings produced by Illumination, the studio behind big hits like “Despicable Me” and “Super Mario Bros.”. The project was announced during the prestigious Annecy Animation Festival, one of the most important events in the global animation industry, solidifying the project’s status on the international stage.
In his debut in the world of animation, Timothée Chalamet will voice Joe, an “introspective rocket mechanic who leads a quiet and solitary life.” Selena Gomez, meanwhile, will play Fran, a “brilliant astro-botanist who is developing the world’s first plant-powered rocket.”
The film’s synopsis reveals that Joe and Fran team up for the inaugural takeoff of this revolutionary rocket, and an immediate attraction emerges, although neither of them is particularly skilled at romance. Their lives become even more complicated when three small, rambunctious, and lovable aliens—Dunk, Welly, and Shirm—seek refuge at Joe’s house, on the run from Zandro, a zealous but inept law enforcement officer. The space visitors realize that Fran’s rocket could be the key to safely returning to their home planet.
Rob Brydon, known for “Barbie” and “The Trip”, will voice Dunk; Diane Morgan, from “Cunk On” and “Mandy”, will play Welly; and Jamie Demetriou, from “Cruella” and “Jay Kelly”, will play Shirm. Actor Brett Goldstein, from the series “Ted Lasso”, will play Officer Zandro. The supporting cast also includes Allison Janney, seen in “Minions & Monsters” and “The Diplomat”, and Lamorne Morris, from “Fargo” and “Spider-Noir”.
The direction of “Not Alone” will be shared by three well-known names from Illumination: Eric Guillon, who co-directed “Despicable Me 3” and was the designer of “Despicable Me” and “Minions”; Claire Dodgson, editor of “The Lorax” and “Minions”; and Jonathan Del Val, co-director of “Minions 2: The Origin of Gru” and “The Secret Life of Pets 2”.
The anticipated release date for “Not Alone” is April 16, 2027. The film is produced by Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of Illumination, with Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis and David Distenfeld serving as executive producers.
Recently, Illumination presented its newest production, “Minions & Monsters”, also during Annecy. The film was well-received by critics, with Guy Lodge of Variety describing it as a “clear high point for the series: a Minions movie with a real idea at its heart in addition to the general gleeful chaos, and proof that these pill-shaped imps are better served as stars than supporting characters.”
