South Korean court sentences Jung Kook’s Brazilian fan to prison and decides on deportation
A Brazilian citizen was sentenced in South Korea to one year in prison, followed by two years on probation, for violating stalking and trespassing laws. The conviction is the result of persistent acts against singer Jung Kook, member of the renowned group BTS.
The fan’s actions intensified in the early hours of December 12 of the previous year, when she rang the doorbell of Jung Kook’s residence, located in Yongsan-gu, a total of 133 times. The next day, she managed to enter the artist’s house without permission, following a delivery man through the side door. Throughout the month, the woman made 22 appearances near the property, hoping to find the singer, even throwing objects or inserting correspondence through the cracks in the gate.
Faced with the series of incidents, Jung Kook filed a complaint, leading to the fan’s arrest. Although released the following day, she received a formal warning from local authorities to stay away from the residence. However, the Brazilian ignored the ban, returning to the place to ring the doorbell and send mail again. In response to her persistence, police imposed an “emergency measure” on December 28, banning her from approaching within 100 meters of the house.
Even with the restrictions imposed, the woman persisted in her actions on January 4 of this year, leaving photos and other printed materials near Jung Kook’s residence. This recidivism culminated in his new arrest and subsequent referral to trial, on charges of violating the laws against stalking and trespassing.
The South Korean court, in its reasoning, highlighted that the defendant committed the crime even after being alerted by the police and did not respect emergency measures. The victim, in turn, demanded exemplary punishment. Although the main intention was to express feelings to the artist, without the intention of causing direct damage, the court considered that the victim did not notice the doorbell at the time of the incident, the invasion did not go deeper into the internal space of the residence and the level of negligence in emergency measures was considered relatively small.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court decision includes the deportation of the Brazilian citizen. The court justified the measure, stating that, with the defendant detained for approximately three months and the imminent forced deportation after the end of the sentence, the risk of recurrence against the victim is significantly reduced.
In January this year, the 30-year-old Brazilian woman’s family revealed that she faces mental disorders. Relatives said that she had moved from Paraíba to São Paulo to work and, despite efforts to continue psychological treatment, she refused. The discovery of her trip to South Korea, made through social media, was a shock for the family, who expressed extreme concern about the worsening of the situation, as the woman was in an outburst, convinced that Jung Kook was the great love of her life.
Another relative of the young woman reported that a similar “outbreak” episode had occurred in 2021, when the woman was referred to a psychiatrist and received a diagnosis of disorder. The family describes a routine of daily conversations, with the mother begging for the return of her daughter, who persistently refuses to return to Brazil.
