CBF decision changes the color of the Brazilian team goalkeepers’ uniform in a crucial match against Scotland
An unexpected change was announced by FIFA in the Brazilian team’s uniform for this Wednesday’s clash (23) against Scotland, scheduled for 7pm (Brasília time). The match is the last round of the group stage of the World Cup. Contrary to what had been communicated, goalkeepers Alisson, Ederson and Weverton will not enter the field wearing red shirts, shorts and socks; the kit will be replaced by a green set.
The change in the Brazilian team’s equipment occurred after a direct request from Samir Xaud, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). According to information from the ge portal, FIFA granted authorization for the exchange, as there was an alternative set available and there was no color conflict with the opposing team’s uniform.
In 2025, the same leader had already demonstrated his opposition to the color red, banning it from Brazil’s second uniform, which would be produced by the Jordan brand. This stance reinforces the president’s commitment to national colors, a crucial element to understand the repetition of the decision.
“It was a delicate matter”, highlighted Samir Xaud last year, when commenting on the issue. He clarified that his position had no political connotation, but rather a deep connection with Brazilian identity. “I took it to Brazil’s side, the colors of the Brazilian flag. Blue, yellow, green and white are the colors of our flags and they are the colors that have to be followed. I was against the red shirt, not for political reasons. It was actually in production. I had an urgent meeting with Nike, I asked them to stop production”, explained the president of the CBF, emphasizing the importance of the colors green, yellow, blue and white to represent the country.
The choice of uniforms for World Cup games is initially defined by FIFA, based on a form previously filled out by each team. However, it is common for adjustments and changes to be made during the coordination meeting of each match, allowing flexibility in situations like this.
When asked to comment on the change, Nike and FIFA chose not to comment on what happened. In turn, the CBF informed that the red goalkeeper uniform is not part of the current collection.
Historically, Brazilian goalkeepers have used the color red on other occasions. In 2013 and 2014, for example, idol Julio César wore the red uniform on the field, demonstrating that the color has already been part of the team’s clothing at different times.
For the clash against Scotland, the Brazilian team’s outfield players will wear the traditional yellow shirt, complemented by white shorts and socks.
