Cristiano Ronaldo makes history by finding the net in six editions of the World Cup and equals Eusébio in goals for Portugal
Cristiano Ronaldo reached an unprecedented milestone in the 2026 World Cup. The Portuguese national team striker scored against Uzbekistan this Tuesday and became the first athlete to find the net in six editions of the global tournament. Furthermore, the star equaled Eusébio as Portugal’s top scorer in World Cups, with nine goals scored.
Advancing the record he himself had set in Qatar in 2022, when he scored goals in five World Cups, the Portuguese now isolates himself again on the men’s list. Players like Marta and Canadian Christine Sinclair already achieved this feat in women’s football. It is important to note that Lionel Messi also participated in six editions of the World Cup, but failed to score goals in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, preventing him from achieving the same feat as Cristiano Ronaldo.

By equaling Eusébio in Portugal’s historic artillery in World Cups, Cristiano Ronaldo reaches a legendary level. Eusébio, an icon of Portuguese football, was the top scorer at the 1966 World Cup in England, with nine goals. With the team having at least two more games this edition, the current captain has a good opportunity to surpass that mark. In the entire history of the Portuguese national team, Cristiano Ronaldo was already the greatest single scorer, with 144 goals currently.
The Portugal team is part of Group K at the 2026 World Cup, facing the teams from Colombia, Uzbekistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Despite no longer being at the peak of his physical form, Cristiano Ronaldo maintains his prominent role in the Portugal national team. As an example of his persistence, in the European Cup qualifiers and in the victorious campaign of the last Nations League, he participated in 15 of his country’s 16 games, starting 14, and found the net 13 times.
In his successful career with the Portuguese national team, the star has already won two Nations Leagues and a European Championship. However, in World Cups, their success has been more limited to date, with their best result being the semi-final in 2006, precisely in their first participation.
