Driver records meteor bolide with intense brightness in the interior of São Paulo
A notable celestial incident was recorded in the interior of São Paulo when a driver documented the appearance of a meteor over Presidente Venceslau. The event took place on Monday morning (22), captured by a vehicle camera.
The recording was made by equipment fixed to the car, while the vehicle was traveling along Rodovia Raposo Tavares (SP-270) at around 6:40 am on the same Monday, offering a clear perspective of the phenomenon.
The images show the celestial event, commonly called a “shooting star”, appearing and disappearing quickly, leaving a trail of light. Experts have detailed the mechanism behind its occurrence.
Historian Vitor Rafael Borges Filgueira, vice-president of the Mariápolis Astronomy Association (SP), classified the object as a bolide. He explained that the intense luminosity and variety of colors captured by the camera result from the overheating and ionization of gases present in the Earth’s atmosphere.
According to Vitor Filgueira, the appearance of a car in the interior region of São Paulo is seen as rare, unlike more frequent occurrences in large urban centers such as São Paulo and Fortaleza. Visibility in less light-polluted areas provides more accurate data for scientific analysis.
Vitor Rafael also noted that, even outside the main area of a meteor shower, many sightings occur in different parts of the sky. This is due to the ability of meteors to cross extensive regions of the celestial vault, increasing the probability of being seen during these periods.
Rodrigo Raffa, physics professor and leader of the Centauri Astronomy Club, located in Itapetininga (SP), confirmed that the observed phenomenon belongs to the category of bolide meteors.
Raffa emphasized that a bolide is a grandiose and impressive manifestation, surpassing in brightness any star or planet and being capable of momentarily lighting up the sky, as evidenced by the recording.
The expert suggested that the captured meteor could be related to the June Bootids, an annual meteor shower made up of space fragments left over from comet 7P/Pons-Winnecke.
However, Rodrigo Raffa highlighted that confirming the origin of the meteor in western São Paulo as part of the Bootídeas requires more records. This additional data collection would allow experts to carry out precise triangulation to identify the radiant point of the rain and, thus, contribute to the mapping of these events.
How to differentiate meteors, meteoroids and meteorites
Rodrigo detailed that the origin of meteors lies in small debris that floats in space, such as pieces of asteroids, comet particles or even waste generated by human activities. When these fragments are in space, they are called meteoroids.
He added that, when penetrating the Earth’s atmosphere, these objects generate a luminous trail due to extreme heat, at which point they become known as meteors, as this manifestation of brightness is an atmospheric phenomenon.
If a portion of the meteoroid resists atmospheric crossing and reaches the Earth’s soil, it is then called a meteorite.

It is important to note that the term meteorite applies exclusively to materials of natural origin, excluding space debris. Planet Earth, continually hit by tiny meteoroids, sees most of them completely disintegrate in the atmosphere, eliminating any threat.
Characteristics that identify a celestial phenomenon
Gustavo Vieira, Physics student at Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp) in Presidente Prudente, offered interesting data about meteors, describing them as rocky fragments from space that enter the atmosphere at extremely high speeds.
According to the student, the intense friction and pressure exerted by the air produce enough heat for the rock to incinerate, resulting in the characteristic glow seen in the sky.
To avoid confusion with planes or satellites, Gustavo Vieira pointed out that the phenomenon has some fundamental attributes that help in its identification.
The speed of meteors is extreme and unpredictable: they appear unexpectedly, cross the sky quickly and disappear in a matter of seconds. In contrast, planes seen from the ground move much more slowly, while satellites follow a straight and constant path.
In terms of brightness and colors, meteors are distinguished from airplanes, which display flashing navigation lights (commonly green, red and white). The brightness of the meteor, in turn, is singular and short-lived.
Gustavo detailed that the incandescent rock of a meteor can display different tones, such as greenish, yellowish or white, varying depending on the metals in its composition and atmospheric conditions.
On the other hand, satellites do not have their own luminosity, they only reflect sunlight.
For this reason, they are most noticeable at dusk or before dawn, resembling a white point of light that moves without blinking.
Regarding shape and trail, certain meteors, such as the one observed in the west of São Paulo, leave a luminous tail resulting from their combustion, which quickly disappears.
Although airplanes can create extensive white trails of condensation that persist for minutes, the trail left by a meteor is purely light and dissipates very quickly.
In terms of sound, planes produce a constant engine noise. Satellites and the vast majority of meteors are completely silent events for those who observe them from the Earth’s surface.
