ESPN rehires controversial writer David Dennis Jr. amid reported plans for company-wide layoffs

The sports broadcasting giant ESPN announced last week the renewal of David Dennis Jr.’s contract, a decision that has sparked internal controversy as the network simultaneously considers significant workforce reductions. Dennis will continue covering NBA, music, and Black culture across Andscape and ESPN television programming. The timing of this announcement has raised questions among employees facing potential job cuts following the company’s acquisition of NFL Network.

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro has received praise in recent years for steering the network away from polarizing political commentary and refocusing on sports coverage. The decision to retain Dennis, however, appears to contradict this strategic direction and has generated concern about the company’s priorities during a period of financial restructuring.

Pattern of controversial public statements

Dennis has accumulated a history of inflammatory social media posts and opinion pieces that have repeatedly embarrassed the network. During the Sydney Sweeney-American Eagle advertising campaign controversy, he posted on Bluesky that he felt “mortified” after what he described as “ACTUAL SCHOLARS ON MESSAGING, EUGENICS AND FASCISM” explained the supposed problematic nature of the advertisements featuring the actress. His statement that “sometimes IT’S GOOD TO LISTEN TO EXPERTS” drew widespread criticism for its extreme interpretation of a mainstream fashion campaign featuring a popular blonde actress.

The writer’s commentary extends beyond entertainment topics into sports-adjacent cultural issues. He recently labeled NBA star LeBron James a “gentrifier” for expressing a preference to play in Nashville rather than Memphis, arguing that any Black person must defend Memphis due to its connection to the National Civil Rights Museum. Dennis also publicly urged WNBA viewers who watch primarily for Caitlin Clark to stop watching the league altogether.

Inconsistent editorial standards in obituaries

Dennis drew significant criticism for his treatment of professional wrestling icon Hulk Hogan’s obituary in July 2025. Hours after Hogan’s death, he published an article arguing that Hogan should be remembered primarily as a racist, stating: “When you are a racist that is your legacy above all else.” The piece centered on a racial slur Hogan used during a secretly recorded private phone conversation nearly two decades earlier, concluding that “Hulk Hogan died being known a racist who also became famous as a professional wrestler.”

This approach contrasted sharply with Dennis’s 2020 obituary of Kobe Bryant. In his piece titled “Remembering Kobe Bryant, a Man Who Never Trusted in Tomorrow,” Dennis focused exclusively on Bryant’s accomplishments on the basketball court, his community involvement, and his role as a father. The article included emotional descriptions of Bryant’s relationship with his daughter: “He showed us a fatherly love that was beautiful to watch unfold. It’s fitting that of all the memes and internet that Kobe birthed, from counting to five, to him glancing over at the crowd, to two men willing to meet in Temecula to fight over him, the last and most viral of them is Kobe explaining basketball to Gigi.”

What the Bryant obituary did not mention were the 2003 rape allegations involving a 19-year-old woman at Cordillera Lodge and Spa in Edwards, Colorado. According to court documents reported by The New York Times, prosecutors had substantial evidence including a bruise on the accuser’s neck, tears in her vaginal wall, and blood on both the woman’s underwear and Bryant’s shirt. Bryant admitted to police he had not explicitly asked for consent. The criminal case was dropped only after the accuser declined to testify. Dennis’s article made no reference to these allegations, despite his insistence in the Hogan piece that character issues should define a person’s legacy “above all else.”

Previous failed experiments with similar programming

ESPN has attempted this formula before with notable failures. Shows built around politically outspoken personalities Jemele Hill and Bomani Jones, including “SC6” and “High Noon,” ranked among the network’s most disappointing ventures. Both Hill and Jones eventually departed ESPN after their programs failed to attract sustainable audiences. Unlike those predecessors who had established reputations and name recognition, Dennis lacks comparable public profile, appearing intermittently to generate controversy before returning to social media platforms like Bluesky.

The network originally hired Dennis in 2021 during what many described as a period of racial reckoning across American institutions. The son of a civil rights activist, Dennis likely appealed to executives seeking to demonstrate commitment to diversity initiatives. At the time, ESPN was a different company, more willing to embrace overtly political content and commentary that extended well beyond sports analysis.

Employee morale concerns during restructuring

The decision to reinvest in Dennis while planning mass layoffs has created tension within the organization. Talented production staff, researchers, writers, and on-air personalities face uncertainty about their employment status following the NFL Network acquisition. Many employees question why the network would prioritize retaining a contributor whose primary output involves music and cultural commentary tangentially related to sports, while dedicated sports journalists and production professionals face termination.

Industry observers note the contradiction between ESPN’s stated goal of refocusing on sports coverage and the decision to extend a contract for someone whose portfolio includes substantial non-sports content. Dennis’s role covering “NBA, music, and black culture” represents exactly the type of expanded cultural commentary that ESPN had been moving away from under Pitaro’s leadership. The announcement suggests either a lack of coordination in company strategy or a willingness to maintain certain politically aligned voices despite broader organizational direction.

Questions about editorial judgment and priorities

Dennis has also used his ESPN platform to make demands of sports figures on political issues. He publicly urged University of Mississippi head football coach Lane Kiffin to take action against Louisiana legislation, claiming the state was “eradicating” Black voting power. The comment assumed both that Kiffin had the ability to influence state legislation and that Dennis’s characterization of the law was unquestionably accurate, neither of which was established fact.

The writer has additionally defended musicians convicted of violent crimes by arguing for separation between art and artist, a standard he did not apply when evaluating Hogan. This selective application of moral judgment has led critics to accuse Dennis of prioritizing ideological consistency over journalistic fairness. His approach treats what he characterizes as word crimes more seriously than documented violent offenses, a hierarchy that many find ethically questionable for someone in a journalistic role.

ESPN now faces questions about whether it remains committed to the sports-focused strategy that has helped restore viewer trust and ratings stability. The Dennis renewal suggests the network may still be willing to invest in divisive personalities whose commentary frequently ventures far from athletic competition. As ESPN employees await news about potential layoffs, the decision to retain a contributor known primarily for generating social media controversy rather than substantive sports analysis has created resentment and confusion about management priorities.
