New extra-large widgets arrive with iOS 27, transforming your iPhone home screen and everyday use
The new version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 27, brings with it a series of innovations, and among them, extra-large widgets stand out. This functionality offers important clues about the possible design of the future iPhone Ultra, suggesting that a larger screen could make the most of these new visual elements, which total more than 15 options.
In the initial launch of iOS 27, 11 of Apple’s most used applications are already able to operate with expanded format widgets.
Those who found iPhone widget options limited in previous versions will find iOS 27 a very relevant update. The company appears to have responded to the desire for greater flexibility in customizing the devices’ main screen.
That’s because Apple has officially introduced a significant new widget size, called “extra large”, which expands viewing possibilities.
Previously, the largest format available, known as “large”, occupied a grid of 4×4 spaces on the home screen. With extra-large widgets, the maximum size extends to a 4×6 grid, which in practice can fill almost an entire page of the user’s home screen.
In the first beta version of iOS 27, it is now possible to access extra-large widgets for 11 popular applications developed by Apple itself. Below is the complete list of widgets already available:
- Calendar: List
- Calendar: Upcoming events
- Home: Accessories
- Music: Recently Played
- Music: Recommendations
- Music: Top Charts
- News: Today
- News: Topic
- Notes: Folder
- Notes: Quick note
- Photos: Album
- Photos: Featured
- Reminders: List
- Shortcuts: Shortcuts
- Stocks: Watch List
- TV: Keep watching
- Weather forecast
Upscaling the size allows extra-large widgets to display never-before-seen amounts of content. For those who have a very extensive agenda or to-do list, or need to view notes simultaneously, these new widgets represent a major advance in terms of usefulness and organization.
It’s likely that throughout the iOS 27 beta testing cycle, Apple will continue to add more extra-large widget options to the list. However, the initial selection already demonstrates the company’s strong commitment to improving the personalization and functionality experience for its users.
