41-year-old nursing assistant fails to survive biopolymer removal surgery and dies
A 41-year-old nursing assistant died on June 18 while undergoing surgery to remove toxic biopolymers applied to her buttocks. The procedure took place in a clinic located inside a shopping center, according to information from local authorities.
The victim, Paula Andrea Beltran Sandoval, was born in Medellín, but lived in New York. She traveled from the United States specifically to perform the surgical intervention in Colombia.
Beltran Sandoval arrived in the Colombian city on June 15, with the purpose of visiting relatives and then undergoing surgery. The procedure was previously scheduled from abroad, at a cost of 38 million Colombian pesos, the equivalent of approximately 8,335 pounds sterling. The patient was already facing health complications resulting from previous fillings.
The surgical intervention took place in the medical tower of the El Tesoro shopping center, located in the El Poblado neighborhood.
According to a court report, the procedure began to present complications approximately one hour and ten minutes after it began. Doctors had already made progress in removing the biopolymers when Beltran Sandoval suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest.
The medical team immediately began advanced resuscitation maneuvers, including applying electric shocks, for a period of more than 40 minutes. Despite efforts, death was declared.
Preliminary information from authorities revealed that Beltran Sandoval had no pre-existing conditions or medical history that could pose a known risk prior to surgery.
A report from the Legal Medical Institute indicated the presence of injuries to the victim’s chest. These injuries would be consistent with the resuscitation attempts carried out by the medical team during the emergency.
The Antioquia Health Department announced the opening of an investigation to investigate the circumstances of the death. A full autopsy will be carried out by experts from the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences. At the same time, health authorities examine the records, licenses and qualifications of the clinic’s staff.
This incident marks the second death linked to cosmetic procedures recorded in Medellín in recent months.
Previously, Carolina Merchan Jaramillo, 30 years old, had died on February 28 in a beauty center also located in El Poblado. Faced with the increase in complaints, authorities intensified inspections of beauty clinics, resulting in the closure of 64 establishments due to irregularities.
Colombian legislation prohibits the injection of biopolymers for aesthetic purposes, a measure that reflects the serious and often irreversible health risks associated with these substances, such as tissue necrosis, material migration and serious infections such as sepsis. In the United Kingdom, the practice is also considered illegal for the same security reasons.
