Discover the visual trajectory: Grand Theft Auto covers evolve until the long-awaited reveal of GTA 6
With the recent release of the cover art for the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 by Rockstar, the moment is opportune to revisit the visual trajectory of the emblematic arts that marked the franchise.
The initial titles in the Grand Theft Auto series, GTA and GTA 2, differ notably from the editions that followed. Developed in 2D with an isometric perspective and a more open narrative, they also featured covers with different logos, more photorealistic illustrations and the absence of central characters.
The release of Grand Theft Auto 3 marked a crucial step forward for the series. This title not only pushed GTA into the 3D universe and solidified the open world model for future productions, but also defined the visual identity of the saga. In it, the Pricedown typography and the collage-style cover style emerged, although this aesthetic was almost never adopted. The initial proposal was art that resembled classic action movie posters, with armed figures, stylized vehicles, explosions and all the characteristic elements of the GTA franchise.
However, the scenario changed drastically after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States, an event that had a profound impact on culture and the entertainment industry. With the game’s launch scheduled for October 3 of that year, Rockstar Games, which maintains an office in New York, decided to postpone the debut for three weeks to implement changes. The development team suppressed dialogue and allusions to terrorism, adjusted visual aspects and replaced the original cover art, perceived as too “intense” for the post-attack context.
In an interview with Edge magazine in 2011, Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games and former visionary of the GTA series, revealed that the new design was created in just one night by artist Stephen Bliss. This renewed aesthetic took inspiration from the poster for the film “Thomas Crown: The Art of Murder” and served as the foundation for practically all subsequent covers in the franchise. Although the original art was maintained in some locations, such as Europe, greater visual standardization would come with the next title.
The release of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was instrumental in solidifying the collage art style and introducing new standard visual elements. Starting with Vice City, all covers of the series began to include a helicopter in the upper left corner, an attractive female figure, with skimpy clothing and suggestive poses, as well as a two-wheeled vehicle. Despite maintaining the aesthetics of GTA 3, the cover of Vice City adopted a significantly more vibrant color palette, in line with the Miami-inspired setting.

More than five years later, Grand Theft Auto 4 introduced another new feature by placing the main character prominently on the cover. While GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas did not showcase their protagonists, GTA IV’s art centered Niko Bellic. Since then, all main titles in the Grand Theft Auto series have given central visibility to their heroes.
The Grand Theft Auto 4 expansions had individual artwork, but only adopted the collage pattern when they were compiled into the “Grand Theft Auto IV: Episodes from Liberty City” package. With GTA 5, the visual essence was preserved, but the logo received modifications. Instead of a conventional Roman numeral, Rockstar inserted the word “five” above it and stylized the number to simulate a dollar bill, making a clear allusion to the game’s central theme: big heists.
This journey takes us to 2026. Last Thursday (18), Rockstar Games finally released the cover art for Grand Theft Auto 6, which remains faithful to the traditional style of the saga. The image includes the expected elements: a helicopter positioned in the top left corner, a woman in a bikini, a motorcycle, secondary figures with imposing appearances and, of course, the protagonists Jason and Lucia.
Furthermore, the new cover art contains a tribute to Brazil, a detail that can be seen in a specific report.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for release on November 19th, with versions for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Pre-orders will be available from June 25th.
