FIA examines Mercedes diffuser amid controversy with Ferrari over Formula 1 regulations
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) is working on drafting a regulatory clarification focused on the diffuser used by the Mercedes team. The initiative comes after formal questions raised by Ferrari, which contests the legality of the component in a scenario of uncertainty regarding the 2026 Formula 1 rules.
Sources indicate that the document with the new guidelines is at an advanced stage and its application could take place after the Austrian Grand Prix. However, the Mercedes team seeks to postpone the implementation of the measure until the next stage, at Silverstone, arguing logistical challenges, as its transport vehicles are already on their way to the Austrian race.
The aerodynamic component in question, an essential part at the rear of the cars, was recently implemented by the German team as part of a package of innovations. These improvements aim to strengthen Mercedes’ performance and ensure its competitiveness on the current grid.
