New film from the iconic Blair Witch franchise confirms theatrical release in 2027 from Lionsgate
The long-awaited new phase of “The Blair Witch Project”, one of the most renowned horror films, already has a date set to hit the big screen. The Lionsgate studio announced that the project, still without an official title, will make its debut on September 24, 2027. The confirmation was released this Tuesday, accompanied by an image on social media that refers directly to the sinister universe of the saga, keeping the details of the plot and the cast in suspense.
The new version of the horror franchise will be directed by Dylan Clark, who is also responsible for rewriting the original script by Chris Thomas Devlin. The executive production will feature a strong team, including Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams, actors from the 1999 hit in the *found footage* style, alongside the directors of the original film, Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick and Gregg Hale.
How a new film project was announced
The development of a new chapter for “Blair Witch” was revealed in 2024, during CinemaCon, through a strategic partnership between Lionsgate and Blumhouse. The agreement sees Blumhouse take charge of reinventing classics from Lionsgate’s horror genre. At the time, Adam Fogelson, head of film at Lionsgate, promised a “new vision for Blair Witch” that promises to captivate a new generation of viewers.

Released at the Sundance Film Festival in January 1999, “The Blair Witch Project” was a landmark. Produced on an extremely modest budget of just US$35,000, the film became an instant phenomenon and one of the most profitable productions in cinema history. Acquired by Artisan Entertainment and released in June of the same year, it grossed an impressive US$248 million globally (equivalent to US$492 million today), securing its place among the top 10 highest-grossing films of 1999 and establishing a new paradigm for independent horror and the *found footage* subgenre. The original narrative follows three film students who disappear into the woods while filming a documentary about the legendary Blair Witch.
Team of producers behind the new release
The reboot of the franchise will be produced by influential names such as Jason Blum and James Wan, from Blumhouse Atomic Monster, in collaboration with Roy Lee. Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath, from Divide/Conquer, will also produce the film. The executive producing team includes Michael Clear and Judson Scott for Blumhouse Atomic Monster, with Alayna Glasthal overseeing the project. Scott O’Brien and Pavan Kalidindi will represent Lionsgate in oversight, while Phil Strina was responsible for negotiating the deal. Steven Schneider also joins as executive producer.
