Samsung reveals UFS 5.0, ultra-fast storage technology that can boost the performance of the Galaxy S27 Ultra
Samsung has introduced a new generation of storage technology that promises to revolutionize the performance of future smartphones, such as the highly anticipated Galaxy S27 Ultra. The South Korean company confirmed Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0, an advanced standard that can significantly increase the speed of mobile devices. This launch comes amid speculation about the upcoming Galaxy S27 series, which could also integrate a 2nm chip, with no official confirmation yet.
New speed standards with Samsung UFS 5.0 technology
The new UFS 5.0 standard was developed with next-generation artificial intelligence applications in mind, which are increasingly present directly on devices, and no longer just in the cloud. Samsung’s solution sets an industry record by achieving bandwidth of up to 10.8 gigabytes per second (GB/s). Sequential read speeds top out at 10.8 GB/s, while sequential write speeds top out at 9.5 GB/s, representing double the performance compared to the previous UFS 4.1 standard. The company highlights the importance of storage as a vital infrastructure for the growing demand for generative AI.
Jangseok Choi, head of memory product planning at Samsung Electronics, stated in June 2026 that the company has successfully reached the development phase of the first UFS 5.0 solution. According to Choi, this achievement sets a new benchmark for mobile storage, reaffirming Samsung’s commitment to innovating for future generations of mobile platforms.
Gain in efficiency and size reduction with UFS 5.0
In terms of energy consumption, UFS 5.0 is 40% more efficient than UFS 4.1, Samsung’s previous model. This improvement is essential to optimize battery life on devices like the Galaxy S27 Ultra, providing longer usage time for users.
In addition to energy efficiency, the new UFS 5.0 standard has a more compact format, with dimensions of 7.5 mm x 13 mm x 0.9 mm. This 6.7% reduction in size, compared to its predecessor, opens up internal space in smartphones, allowing the integration of larger components, such as batteries with more capacity. Large-scale production of UFS 5.0 is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year.
