Transit of Fujian aircraft carriers through the Taiwan Strait raises tensions during military exercises
The advanced aircraft carrier Fujian, belonging to China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA), made a passage through the Taiwan Strait. The movement took place in a period of growing geopolitical sensitivity in the region, intensified by military maneuvers.
Regarding the purpose of the ship’s deployment, Song Zhongping, who serves as a military commentator and was a PLA instructor, suggested a possible reason. He indicated that the Fujian would be returning to its base in the southern island province of Hainan for a rest before heading to the South China Sea for more training.
Taiwanese forces monitor movements of Chinese aircraft carriers
During the ship’s passage, the armed forces of the island of Taiwan maintained close surveillance. Using integrated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities, the Taiwanese defense ministry said on Tuesday that it closely monitored the aircraft carrier’s every movement, ensuring full knowledge of its route.
The ministry also released an image of the Fujian with an empty deck, with no aircraft visible. Previously, Song had commented that the absence of planes could indicate that the vessel was operating in a low threat risk scenario.
Fujian’s crossing of the Taiwan Strait occurred just one day after Taiwan began its Immediate Combat Readiness Exercise. This military maneuver, scheduled to last five days, has the primary purpose of increasing the island’s ability to quickly transition to a state of conflict, highlighting the complexity of the regional situation.
The Immediate Combat Readiness Exercise, which began on Monday, mainly aims to test Taiwan’s agility in war scenarios. The central purpose is to enable the island to mobilize quickly and effectively.
Taiwanese defense officials explained that the focus of the exercise is on the period immediately before the start of a conflict. The intention is to assess the ability of military units to prepare and mobilize promptly after receiving orders.
