Tight dispute for the top of Group C with Brazil, Morocco and Scotland
In the last round of Group C, three teams have real chances of reaching first place. Brazil and Scotland face each other directly in Miami, while Morocco will play against Haiti, which no longer has a chance of qualifying, in Atlanta. All games in the round take place simultaneously. Currently, the Brazilian team is at the top of the group with four points, enjoying an advantage on goal difference over Morocco, which also has four points. This difference in tiebreaker criteria will be crucial. Scotland, in turn, is in third place with three points.
Considering the favoritism of Brazil and Morocco in their respective clashes, it is likely that the definition of group leadership will be determined by the tiebreaker criteria. If both teams secure victory, goal difference will be the deciding factor. Currently, the Brazilian team has a two-goal advantage over the African team, requiring Morocco to achieve a more elastic result in order to overtake Brazil and take top spot in the table.
Important news for the Brazilian team is the return of Neymar, who has recovered from a calf injury and could play a few minutes in the game against Scotland. However, Raphinha will not be available, as he was substituted in the last match after feeling pain in his thigh. Coach Carlo Ancelotti still has a question about who will fill Raphinha’s vacancy, with Luiz Henrique, Rayan and Endrick being the main candidates for the position.
In their first participation in the World Cup in 28 years, Scotland presents renowned players on the European football scene. Among the most notable names is midfielder Scott McTominay, who plays for Napoli. The team also has full-back Andrew Robertson, who spent nine seasons at Liverpool; striker Ché Adams, from Torino; and Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn, responsible for the only Scottish goal in the competition, scored against Haiti.
In the group’s side clash, Morocco will probably maintain the formation they used in the previous rounds. Players who stand out include winger Achraf Hakimi, midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and striker Ismael Saibari, scorer of the two Moroccan goals in the tournament. On the other hand, Haiti, even though already eliminated, intends to use the quality of its offensive sector to try to surprise and, who knows, win its first point in a World Cup.
Advance to the next stage: four teams looking for two places in Group B
This Wednesday’s marathon of games will begin with the clashes in Group B. Canada and Switzerland, both with four points and at the top of the group, meet in Vancouver to compete for first place. Due to a superior goal difference – the result of the 6-0 defeat of Qatar, with three goals from Jonathan David –, the Canadian team will only need a draw to secure the top of the group.
In another Group B clash, Bosnia and Qatar face each other in Seattle, both seeking to qualify. Both teams have just one point and need victory to maintain their aspirations of moving forward in the tournament. The winner of this match could finish in second place, depending on the score of the match between Canada and Switzerland.
Definition of Group A ends the day’s clashes
This Wednesday’s night clashes will culminate in the definition of Group A. Mexico, which has already secured its place in the round of 16 and the leadership of the group after two victories, will host the Czech Republic at the Azteca Stadium, in Mexico City, and will be able to rest some of its main players. The Czech team, which is in third place with one point, urgently needs victory to keep its hope of advancing in the competition alive.
In the other game in Group A, South Africa will face South Korea in Monterrey. The South Koreans are in second place with three points, while the South Africans are in last place, with just one point. For the Asian team, a draw is enough to guarantee classification. Bafana Bafana, the South African team’s nickname, need victory to have any chance of progressing to the round of 16.
