Developer Bungie announces massive cuts affecting much of the Destiny 2 team
Impactful news has arrived for the gaming community and, especially, for Bungie professionals who have dedicated years to the shooter title Destiny 2. About a month ago, the studio had revealed that the next update would be the final one for the game, marking the end of almost nine years of service. At that time, the team’s future remained uncertain, with speculation about a possible transition to Destiny 3, but now the most worrying situation has come to fruition.
Bungie confirmed a substantial cut in its workforce, affecting a vast portion of the Destiny 2 development team, in addition to some Marathon professionals and Sony Interactive Entertainment employees who supported the producer. In a statement, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony’s Studio Business Group, explained that several options were evaluated, but the reduction was seen as essential to harmonize the studio’s resources with its priority goals and future objectives. This movement reflects a restructuring trend that has been observed in several game studios, aiming to optimize costs and strategic alignment in a competitive market.
Regarding Marathon, Bungie’s latest title, Hulst reiterated its value to the company’s portfolio. He assured that the development team will continue to receive support, focusing on the strength of Seasons 1 and 2 and the development of new incubation projects. Despite the enthusiasm expressed about future innovations, Marathon’s long-term stability does not have the same guarantee of longevity that Destiny 2 enjoyed.
Bungie itself released a note justifying the shutdowns, stating that, after the last content update for Destiny 2 and with the next projects still in the early stages, it was not possible to maintain the previous operational structure. The magnitude of the cuts suggests the company will operate at a significantly reduced capacity, a scenario that follows other rounds of layoffs that have hit the developer over the past three years.

The final update for Destiny 2, called Monument of Triumph, was released on June 9th. Simultaneously with the announcement about the definitive end of support for the game, Bungie made Destiny 2: The Collection available, a comprehensive package that encompasses all expansions and additional content in a single offer.
The news of the layoffs generated expressions of solidarity with the countless developers affected. Meanwhile, Marathon, Bungie’s latest release, is among the best-rated titles of the year so far, receiving praise from specialized critics.
