Paraná records a new cold record with -4.8°C and frost for the 2nd day in a row; horse with wool ‘blouse’ goes viral
The state of Paraná marked a new historic low temperature for the year this Thursday (25), with a record of -4.8°C in General Carneiro, in the southern region. According to data from the Environmental Technology and Monitoring System (Simepar), the thermal sensation in the location reached an impressive -6.3°C.
The previous day, Wednesday (24), General Carneiro had already experienced an intense cold, with thermometers reading -3°C and a thermal sensation estimated at -8.4°C. The previous record in 2026, for the first week of winter, belonged to Guarapuava, which recorded -2.4°C on May 11, with a thermal sensation of -7.5°C.
Extremely low temperatures caused frosts in several areas of the state, generating visible impacts. In the metropolitan region of Curitiba, the strength of the ice was such that lettuce crops even froze. In Umuarama, in the northwest of Paraná, concern for animal welfare led residents to dress a horse in a woolen sweater.
Cities in Paraná with temperatures below zero
Among the 58 meteorological stations monitored by Simepar and the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) in Paraná, ten municipalities had temperatures below 0°C this Thursday (25). The list includes General Carneiro (-4.8°C), Palmas (-3.5°C), Pinhão (-1.5°C), Guarapuava (-1.4°C), Francisco Beltrão (-1.2°C), Palotina (-0.9°C), General Carneiro (-0.8°C), União da Vitória (-0.2°C) and Lapa (-0.1°C). Many of these cities, located in higher altitude regions in the south and south-central part of the state, are historically more likely to record the coldest temperatures during the winter.
Simepar’s projection for the afternoon indicated a gradual decrease in cloudiness, with the sun gaining strength. Expected maximums ranged between 13°C and 15°C in most of the state, and could reach 17°C to 19°C in the north.
As the night progresses, temperatures should fall again, maintaining the feeling of cold in all regions of Paraná.
For this Friday (26), the forecast points to a reduction in the intensity of the cold in Paraná, due to the displacement of the polar air mass towards the ocean. However, most regions of the state are still expected to experience temperatures below 10°C during the day.
In the Southwest and Center-South of the state, the possibility of frost remains. In Campos Gerais and the metropolitan region of Curitiba, there is a forecast of an increase in fog formation. The weekend marks the return of the rains to Paraná, and the conditions for the occurrence of frosts should end.
