Tottenham is studying competition with Manchester United for Mateus Fernandes in a R$550 million negotiation
Tottenham Hotspur is analyzing the possibility of entering the dispute for the signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes, currently at West Ham. The move could put Spurs on a collision course with Manchester United, who have also expressed interest in the player.
The London club’s board has adopted an aggressive policy in the current transfer period, aiming to strengthen the squad under the command of coach Roberto De Zerbi, after a season in which the team was almost relegated from the Premier League.
Recently, goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka became Tottenham’s fourth reinforcement this window, arriving last Wednesday (24). Before him, the club had already announced Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson. In addition to these acquisitions, Tottenham is preparing a new attempt for Sandro Tonali, after Newcastle rejected an initial offer of 75 million pounds (approximately 99 million dollars). Manchester City striker Savinho is also on the list of possible arrivals.
Reports obtained by ESPN indicate that Manchester United is already negotiating with West Ham to secure the arrival of Fernandes. However, in recent days, Tottenham intensified its surveys and signaled that it would be willing to present a financial proposal superior to that of the Old Trafford team.
West Ham sets a price of around 80 million pounds to release the athlete. A potential bidding war between the two English giants, Tottenham and Manchester United, has the power to increase the cost of the transfer even further.
Despite having been relegated to the Championship, the second English division, West Ham does not face financial urgency to sell its main athletes. This scenario allows the club to maintain its position of not giving in easily in negotiations, seeking maximum value for its talents, since economic stability is often ensured by mechanisms such as parachute payments.
Fernandes arrived at West Ham last summer from Southampton in a deal that initially cost £38 million. The Portuguese’s contract includes a clause that guarantees Southampton 15% of any value from a future sale of the player.
Last season, the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder showed good performance, registering four goals and four assists over 38 games played.
