Probe initiated into reported misappropriation of significant devotee offerings at Ayodhya’s iconic Ram temple

India’s recently inaugurated Ram temple in Ayodhya, a site of immense religious and political importance, is now at the heart of a significant controversy following allegations of large-scale financial irregularities. Devotee donations, potentially amounting to tens of millions of rupees, are reportedly missing, triggering a federal investigation and widespread concern.

The grand shrine, dedicated to the Hindu deity Ram, was unveiled in January 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since its opening, it has rapidly ascended to become one of the nation’s most visited pilgrimage destinations, drawing an estimated 50 million visitors annually.

This esteemed status is now overshadowed by claims that cash, precious metals, and valuable jewelry offered by worshippers have been improperly handled, leading to a political firestorm and formal petitions filed with the Supreme Court demanding a court-monitored inquiry.

Allegations surface amid temple’s rising prominence

Reports detailing the alleged embezzlement have cast a shadow over the temple’s operations. A former city legislator has publicly stated that more than 70 million rupees, equivalent to hundreds of thousands of US dollars, cannot be accounted for from the offerings made by the faithful.

These serious accusations come at a time when the temple’s financial intake is substantial. The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, the independent body responsible for managing the shrine, recorded an income of 3.27 billion rupees ($35 million USD) in the financial year 2024-25, positioning it among India’s most affluent religious institutions.

Legal and political repercussions unfold

In response to the growing public and political pressure, the state government has established a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve into the matter. The SIT’s mandate is to thoroughly examine the claims of misappropriation and determine the veracity of the allegations.

The controversy has quickly escalated into a national political debate. Opposition parties are vocally demanding accountability from the current administration, given the temple’s deep association with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which also governs the state where Ayodhya is located.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials have already taken action, naming eight individuals in connection with the alleged embezzlement. These individuals are currently in custody, undergoing questioning, and are expected to appear before a magistrate within the coming days.

Whistleblower’s claims and safety concerns

The initial concerns regarding the handling of donations were reportedly raised by Mahipal Singh, who previously oversaw the trust’s accounts team. Singh, now identified as a key whistleblower, claims he was removed from his position after voicing internal concerns about the management of cash offerings and valuable gifts.

Singh has publicly detailed his experiences, alleging that his attempts to highlight irregularities led to his dismissal. He has also expressed grave fears for his personal safety, citing death threats and immense pressure, which have made him reluctant to speak further on the matter to media outlets.

Historical context and temple’s significance

The Ram temple’s location holds immense historical and religious weight, having been the focal point of a decades-long dispute that profoundly shaped Indian politics. The site, believed by many Hindus to be the birthplace of Lord Ram, was previously home to the 16th-century Babri mosque, which was controversially demolished by Hindu activists in 1992, leading to widespread communal riots.

Following an extensive legal battle, the Supreme Court of India ruled in 2019 to allocate the disputed land for the construction of a Hindu temple, while also mandating alternative land for a mosque. The temple’s construction was a central pledge of the BJP, and its inauguration was widely seen as a significant political achievement contributing to the party’s electoral success.

Official responses and ongoing inquiries

The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has vehemently denied all accusations of financial impropriety. Champat Rai, the trust’s general secretary, released a video statement asserting that all activities, including the collection and counting of offerings, are subject to routine audits by trustees, workers, and even employees from the State Bank of India.

Rai emphasized that the counting process is extensive, often spanning several days, and that no discrepancies have been identified during these regular audits. This assertion stands in contrast to the allegations that have led to the current state and federal level investigations.

The complex itself, encompassing the main temple and six smaller shrines, attracts between 70,000 and 80,000 devotees daily, with numbers tripling during weekends and major festivals. Visitors typically place their offerings in approximately 35 donation boxes strategically located throughout the sprawling 2.7-acre site.

The arrest of the eight individuals signifies a concrete step in the ongoing investigation. Authorities are expected to present these individuals before a magistrate soon, which could lead to further legal proceedings and potentially shed more light on the extent of the alleged malfeasance.

Public reaction in Ayodhya

Long-time residents of Ayodhya have expressed deep shock and dismay over the corruption allegations at a site they consider sacred. Many view the reported theft of donations as a profound betrayal of faith and a direct affront to religious sanctity.

One local resident, Vijay Lakshmi, articulated the common sentiment, stating that “The offerings are meant for the temple’s upkeep and for the welfare of pilgrims. It’s not meant for people to take home.” Another resident, Santosh Puri, lamented that the allegations constitute “a fatal blow to our religion,” highlighting the emotional impact on the community.

Calls for transparent oversight

Beyond the immediate arrests and investigations, a broader call for enhanced transparency and accountability has emerged from various political factions. Opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party and former state chief minister, have publicly questioned the management of donations and demanded greater clarity.

Members of Parliament, such as Ayodhya MP Awadhesh Prasad, have advocated for a court-monitored investigation and suggested the suspension of trust members during the inquiry to ensure impartiality. Even some local BJP leaders have joined the chorus, seeking a thorough probe into the handling of funds and the individuals involved, underscoring the bipartisan concern over the integrity of the temple’s financial operations.
