Royal Family: Harry’s Althorp residence during visit to the United Kingdom could send a message to King Charles and William, experts say
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are planning a visit to the UK next month, with the possibility of staying at Princess Diana’s historic ancestral home, Althorp House. The trip will mark the Duke of Sussex’s first return to his homeland in four years, accompanied by his wife and two children. The agenda includes the one-year countdown celebrations to the Birmingham 2027 Invictus Games.
Representatives from Archewell, the office that handles the affairs of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were contacted but were unable to comment on the accommodation arrangements due to security concerns.
Analysts assess little chance of reconciliation between Prince William and Harry
Dan Wakeford, founder of Celebrity Intelligence, commented on Prince Harry’s eagerly awaited return to the UK. He addressed Harry’s relationship with King Charles and highlighted that a meeting with Prince William continues to be considered unlikely.
Expert points out lack of contact as Prince Harry and family plan return
Royal experts reported that the choice of Althorp House, owned by the Spencer family, could be the place to stay for Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their children. The residence, located about an hour from Birmingham, was scheduled to close to visitors on July 10 and 11, dates that coincide with Harry and Meghan’s expected presence in the United Kingdom, as reported by People magazine.
Asked about the coincidence, a spokesperson for Althorp declined to comment, while Archewell reiterated that it does not discuss accommodation for security reasons.

Harry’s personal connection to his mother’s Althorp legacy
For Prince Harry, Althorp is not just an estate; the place represents a deep link to his mother’s heritage and one of the few private spaces that hold her memory.
British journalist and photographer Helena Chard noted that by staying at Althorp, Harry could connect with Diana’s story “on his own terms”, without the imposition of royal house protocol.
She emphasized that the property provides privacy, seclusion and a direct connection to her mother’s memory, something that Buckingham Palace, as an active royal residence and office complex, could not provide.
Chard also mentioned that the place has the “cozy luxury” that Meghan appreciates, as well as being an environment where Harry feels closer to Diana. According to the expert, the Sussexes would have more control over the situation, and Harry expressed the desire for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to know Diana’s story.
Althorp as a place of family homage and learning
Importantly, Althorp is also the burial place of Princess Diana, a preserved space away from the spotlight. The family’s possible visit would come just after the late Princess of Wales’ birthday on July 1, and would be especially meaningful for 5-year-old Lilibet, whose middle name honors her grandmother.
Helena Chard reinforced that the property presents itself as an ideal refuge for the Sussexes, allowing them to “strictly protect the children’s privacy”, in accordance with their own wishes.
Implications of the choice of residence for the relationship with royalty
Previous news reports indicated that King Charles had offered the Sussexes accommodation at a royal estate, but there was no public response to the offer. Buckingham Palace has also been contacted for comment, and it has previously been reported that the monarch has offered Harry accommodation at Buckingham Palace in the past, an offer he declined.
Royal commentator Amanda Matta pointed out that “staying at Althorp rather than a royal estate would certainly send a message that Harry is prioritizing his connection with Diana and his family’s privacy over institutional alignment at this time.”
Matta added that Buckingham Palace has undergone extensive renovations and, although it remains King Charles’ official London residence, it has been little used by him, who prefers Clarence House or Highgrove. Prince William has also signaled that Buckingham Palace will not be his main residence as the future king.
Despite Althorp’s relevance, Matta highlighted that the property is just “one of several alternatives for the Sussex family’s stay in the United Kingdom”.
She described Althorp as the ideal environment for Archie and Lilibet to learn about “Grandma Diana”, given her story’s physical presence there. Matta further noted that the estate allows for a private introduction to that side of the family, without the pressure of official royal protocol and the need to manage the tense relationships between the Spencer and Windsor families.
Difficulty in casual encounters with the royal family
However, the same expert considered that staying in Althorp would make it unlikely that the Sussexes would have a “chance meeting” with any member of the royal family.
The organization of senior members of the royal family’s schedules is strictly controlled, according to Matta, which means that if they don’t want to meet Harry and Meghan, they won’t. She added that the summer season offers the “perfect excuse” from busy social schedules or private family vacations.
Benefits of choosing Althorp for the image of King Charles
Another perspective came from British royal expert Hilary Fordwich, who stated that a stay at Althorp could be beneficial even for King Charles.
Fordwich argued that this choice would be “much better” than the family staying at Buckingham Palace. She argued that Althorp would eliminate any question of public funding, allowing the king to preserve his image. Additionally, the Sussexes would stay “well away from Prince William,” who reportedly prefers not to have contact with them.
It’s worth noting that Prince Harry, 41, has previously stayed at Althorp, which is owned by his uncle, Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, during previous visits to the UK.
On another relevant point, if the Sussexes opt for a royal residence, there will be no automatic security measures, as these are determined by the Home Office, as reported by People magazine.
This security issue intensified as the couple lost taxpayer-funded police protection when they stepped away from royal duties in 2020. Harry challenged this decision in court, citing concerns for the safety of his wife and children.
Lack of plans for a reunion with King Charles and focus on documentaries
Furthermore, the local press points out that there are no confirmed plans for a reunion between King Charles and his son. The two met on Harry’s previous visits when he traveled alone to the UK.
The last meeting between father and son took place in September 2025, at a royal residence in London, where they had a 55-minute private meeting. It was their first face-to-face meeting in 19 months. At the time, Harry was in the United Kingdom for the WellChild awards ceremony and events related to the Invictus Games.
Despite the speculation, Amanda Matta assessed that this trip “seems more like a personal pilgrimage focused on strengthening family ties than a strategic maneuver towards ‘peace negotiations'”. She highlighted that this would be especially true if the Sussexes were staying at Althorp, as while it wouldn’t preclude a meeting with Charles, it would require more planning if they weren’t on royal estates.
However, Helena Chard suggested the visit may have a “greater purpose” than simply reconnecting with Harry’s roots. She stated that Princess Diana, the Invictus Games and the “next chapter” offer “rich documentary material”. The anniversary of Diana’s death in 2027, together with the Birmingham Invictus Games, creates a “natural chronology”. She considered that the sequence of projects will depend on the balance between the access the Sussexes want to give and the privacy they want for their children, noting that the first photos of the children at Diana’s grave would be of great value to the media, and Netflix is aware of this.
Dan Wakeford, founder of Celebrity Intelligence, previously expressed that although some members of the House of Windsor fear private conversations being leaked to the press, Harry may have learned from past experiences.
Although Prince Harry has not publicly expressed regret over what he said to William, Wakeford has stated, based on his sources, that Harry regrets some statements made in the Netflix documentary and book ‘Spare’ about his brother and father. He added that there are no plans to continue projects, whether with Netflix or books, that address his family in a similar way.
“Diana Effect” in the Sussexes’ image strategy
On the other hand, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams mused that while Harry’s desire to reconnect with his late mother’s memory is genuine, he wouldn’t be surprised if the Sussexes also sought to benefit from the lasting “Diana effect” in their attempt to rebuild their image in Britain.
For Fitzwilliams, conducting this visit, if it takes place, will be “crucial for us to assess his intentions”. He noted that the couple have not found success in Hollywood, but “intend to use the enormous worldwide media interest in their visit to their advantage.” The connection with Diana, according to the expert, could be fundamental in their strategy to “combat the very low popularity ratings in the United Kingdom”.
