Muslera breaks silence and reveals immense suffering due to failures in Uruguay’s elimination from the World Cup
Uruguay’s experienced goalkeeper Fernando Muslera decided to speak publicly after the team’s elimination from the World Cup, breaking a pact of silence with the press. He addressed the personal failings that occurred in the 1-0 defeat to Spain. The athlete, who holds the record for World Cup games for his nation, revealed that he expressed his regret to his colleagues in the locker room for the mistakes made during the tournament hosted in Canada, the United States and Mexico.
Using the most frank communication possible, Muslera addressed his compatriots, confessing an unprecedented regret in his extensive professional career. “In my entire long career and with the dedication I put into preparing for this World Cup, I have never experienced such intense suffering because of football,” declared the 40-year-old athlete, emphasizing the uniqueness of this moment of pain, something unusual for a player with such experience and a history of resilience in major competitions.
The Uruguayan newspaper Ovación highlighted that Muslera was the only one to talk to the press when leaving the stadium in Guadalajara. There, he shared details about the conversation he had with his teammates behind the scenes.
The goalkeeper expressed his deep regret for his below-expected performance at the World Cup. “As I shared in the locker room, after tempers calmed down a little, today I deeply regret not having performed well in this World Cup,” said Muslera, extending his apology to his teammates and the entire Uruguayan people, recognizing that his words may not be enough to repair the situation.
To overcome this challenging period, the footballer indicated that he will seek comfort and support from his closest family members.
Muslera reflected on the nature of his position and the sport: “It’s time to surround myself with the people I love most, so that I can replenish my energy. The essence of this sport, and in particular my position, lies in this: sometimes it offers us great joy, and at other times, it demands a high price from us.” He emphasized the duality between the glories and sacrifices required by football.
Uruguay’s national team has been formally disqualified from the World Cup. The team’s performance included a defeat to Spain and two draws, with Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia, resulting in just two points in the group stage of the championship.
