Valve predicts that Steam Machine will have a faster update rate than Steam Deck due to different strategies
Valve, even before officially presenting the new version of the Steam Machine, is already discussing the next models of the compact desktop computer. Company engineers, including Pierre-Loup Griffais, indicated that this new device is not expected to have the same durability over its life cycle as the Steam Deck portable console.
Speaking to PC Gamer magazine, it was clarified that this difference lies in the different purposes of each hardware. The Steam Deck is designed as a platform with a more restricted architecture, which justifies maintaining stable configurations that are less subject to annual modifications.
On the other hand, the Steam Machine is seen by Valve as a conventional personal computer, operating in a similar way to other prefabricated equipment found on the market. Griffais detailed that, for a device of this nature, “it is somewhat less essential to maintain an unchanged performance target for a period of five years.”
Development of the next generation Steam Machine is not yet a priority
Although he predicts that the Steam Machine will receive frequent updates, Griffais points out that creating a successor is not Valve’s main focus right now. According to the engineer, the company first needs to observe the acceptance of the product in the market and how consumers and competitors will react to future generations of consoles.

One of the persistent obstacles for the entire technology industry is the constant rise in prices for vital components such as RAM and SSDs. Valve itself recognizes that the cost of the first Steam Machine will be higher than desired, reflecting the scenario of global inflation and chip shortages that have impacted the supply chain, and it is not the only company to pass these increases on to end consumers.
Microsoft, for example, confirmed on Thursday (25) the increase in the price of Xbox Series X|S consoles from August onwards, justifying the decision by rising storage costs. The company does not exclude the possibility of further adjustments in 2027, if the current economic situation does not show signs of stabilization.
Valve engineers indicate that all of these elements, including economic challenges and consumer behavior, will be crucial in planning future generations of the compact PC. There is concern about the tendency of consumers to postpone upgrades, given the increasing difficulty in affording the new price levels established by the industry.
