A vast fire that broke out at a plastic products factory in the Higashiyodogawa neighborhood of Osaka, Japan, on the night of May 28, resulted in the destruction of eight buildings, including a neighboring apartment complex. The total area affected by the flames was approximately one thousand square meters, and a teenager suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized.

Dense smoke and rapid spread of fire in Osaka

Local residents were alerted by a dense cloud of black smoke and intense flames at around 5:30 pm that day, when emergency service 119 received a call reporting the incident. The fire quickly spread, consuming the factory structure and threatening surrounding buildings, due to the nature of the materials stored and produced on site.

Challenges in controlling fires in plastic factories

The factory in question specialized in the production of reinforced plastics, materials known for their high flammability and the complexity of their control in fire situations. Burning plastic releases toxic gases and generates dense smoke that makes visibility and breathing difficult, posing an additional risk to firefighters and the surrounding population. This type of incident requires specific equipment and strategies to contain the flames and mitigate environmental damage.

Action by the fire department and the impact on neighboring buildings

Osaka fire department crews quickly mobilized to the scene. Despite the initial intensity, the flames were controlled after approximately an hour and a half of incessant work. However, the devastating power of the fire was enough to seriously compromise a total of eight buildings, in addition to the factory itself, which had its thousand square meters completely destroyed. Among the affected structures was a residential building, whose residents were evacuated.

Minor injuries and witness reports in Komatsu neighborhood

A young man was taken to a hospital with minor injuries after the incident. The teenager’s identity has not been released, but his condition is considered stable and not life-threatening.

Residents of the Komatsu region, in Higashiyodogawa, described moments of apprehension and shock at the scene. “It was burning a lot,” reported one person, still shaken. Another witness added: “At first it was black smoke. There were also red flames, very visible on the horizon.” The statements highlight the speed and force with which the fire spread through the area.

Proximity to Hankyu Kamishinjo Station and additional risks

The fire site is located close to Kamishinjo Station, which is part of the Hankyu Kyoto line, an important transport route in the city of Osaka. The proximity to an area of high circulation and population density added an element of concern for authorities, due to the potential for interruption of services and the risk of spread to other essential infrastructure, although the station was not directly hit by the flames. Investigations are underway to determine the exact causes of the accident and whether there was a breach in safety at the factory.
