WhatsApp users on iPads can now celebrate the arrival of a long-awaited new aesthetic, which finally equates the visual experience to that already present on iPhones. Meta implemented a significant design overhaul to harmonize the app’s appearance across its Apple devices, ending the era of a more rigid and basic interface.

The most recent beta version of Apple’s tablet messenger incorporates the acclaimed and sophisticated Liquid Glass design, a visual style that debuted with iOS 26. The application’s adaptation to Apple’s aesthetic language is notable, providing a more contemporary and dynamic user experience, in response to the expectations of iPad owners.

In addition to being a merely visual change, this initiative represents an essential strategic movement to ensure a cohesive and standardized user experience between the different devices. Although WhatsApp shares the same code base between iPhone, iPad and Mac, Meta has historically released updates gradually. However, this update suggests that the iPad now receives equivalent design attention to other devices, marking an end to the disparity.

How Liquid Glass design transforms the interface

The most noticeable and immediate change is manifested in the bottom navigation bar, known as the tab bar. Unlike its former rigid attachment to the base of the display, it now exhibits a floating and semi-transparent effect. This gives an unprecedented visual depth, breaking with the previous appearance that was perceived as flat and uninspiring.

The top of the screen also features a new dynamic. When scrolling through conversations, the top bar progressively becomes translucent, revealing in a subtly blurred way the content that slides behind it. This detail, although discreet, considerably improves the feeling of fluidity in everyday interaction with the application.

The innovations are not limited to just the main panels, as this update integrates a series of other improvements:

  • Redesigned buttons with the familiar frosted glass effect, similar to those found on the iPhone.
  • Improved animations that provide superior fluidity when interacting with interface components.
  • Context menus now display the same translucent style, ensuring aesthetic consistency throughout the application.
  • The chat bar, intended for typing messages, has been redesigned to float elegantly over the content, eliminating the old text labels.

Prospects for more comprehensive and uniform visual integration

The strategy of releasing these updates in a segmented manner allows the WhatsApp team to monitor the occurrence of bugs and optimize performance before a global rollout. This approach is particularly logical considering the different dimensions of an iPad screen, and for this reason, the new feature is, for now, only available to a selected group of users in the beta version.

Future expectations are promising. The company is already committed to extending this same standard of visual enhancement to the Mac app. This action underlines a clear commitment to consolidating the design language across the entire Apple ecosystem, spanning iOS, iPadOS and macOS.

Now, the user community awaits the official launch to the wide public. For those who already have iOS 26 and the appropriate beta version of the app, the update is automatically applied by the operating system without the need to activate hidden settings. Just update and enjoy the new look.
