A 15-year-old teenager in the United States lost her life as a result of her participation in the Benadryl challenge, a dangerous viral phenomenon on digital platforms, such as Tiktok, which encourages the excessive consumption of anti-allergy medications to induce hallucinations.

Family members reported that Leah Presson had no “brain activity” after experiencing a series of seizures shortly after taking the drug, according to recent reports.

The young woman’s brain death was confirmed on June 14. Later, her father, Richard Presson, reported that his daughter did not survive after days in hospital fighting for her life.

It is important to note that in the US, Benadryl is restricted for sale to those over 18, raising questions about how minors access the medication for such challenges.

The Benadryl challenge, which began circulating in 2020, has resurfaced in the spotlight in recent weeks. This risky practice encourages teenagers to record and publish videos of their attempts on social media, using abusive doses of the antihistamine.

Participants in the challenge reportedly ingest between 12 and 14 Benadryl pills in an attempt to trigger hallucinations, ignoring stern warnings from health experts about potentially fatal side effects.

The essence of this challenge consists of consuming high doses of Benadryl to achieve a state of euphoria or to induce visions, resulting from the action of diphenhydramine, the active ingredient present in the anti-allergy medication.

Diphenhydramine, an antihistamine often used to treat allergies and allergic reactions, typically causes effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, difficulty urinating and rapid heartbeat.

However, ingesting large amounts of this component can trigger extremely dangerous reactions, including mental confusion, slurred speech, dilated pupils, body overheating, severe cardiac arrhythmias, convulsions and, in more serious situations, death.

In a case with great similarity, which occurred in 2023, Jacob Stevens, a 13-year-old teenager from Ohio, USA, died after participating in the same risky challenge.

As reported, the young man ingested between 12 and 14 pills of an over-the-counter antihistamine with the aim of causing hallucinations. While being filmed by friends while carrying out the internet challenge, his body began to convulse.

Before his death, the boy remained connected to a ventilator for approximately a week.
