The Toyota Highlander SUV, a seven-seater model produced exclusively at the automaker’s factories in the United States, will arrive at all Toyota dealerships in Japan from August 1, 2026. The news marks the completion of a broader sales plan, which expands the vehicle’s availability beyond the capital Tokyo, where it was initially launched.
Toyota’s decision to make the Highlander accessible throughout Japan reinforces the company’s strategy of diversifying its offering of imported vehicles. The initial sales phase, which began on April 2, 2026, was restricted to Toyota Mobility Tokyo, serving as a trial balloon for the SUV’s arrival to the Japanese public.
The impact of the new vehicle certification system
The national introduction of the Highlander is a direct reflection of the effectiveness of the “American Made Passenger Vehicle Certification System”, an initiative implemented on February 16, 2026. This innovative program is the result of trade negotiations between the United States and Japan, aimed at streamlining the vehicle import process.
The central point of the system is to allow automobiles that already meet strict American safety standards to be sold in Japan without the need for additional conformity testing in the country. Such a measure not only accelerates the entry of new models, but also paves the way for a greater variety of foreign vehicles in the Japanese market, benefiting both automakers and consumers. In addition to the Highlander, Toyota has already taken advantage of the system to bring the Tundra pickup truck and is planning the arrival of the Camry, a model also sold in the USA.
Highlander: a spacious SUV for the Japanese market
The Toyota Highlander is a three-row SUV designed to meet a variety of needs, from everyday use in the city to long trips and leisure activities. The first generation of the vehicle appeared in the United States in 2001 and quickly won over the public, accumulating more than 3.6 million units sold by 2025.
The version now arriving in Japan is the fourth generation of the model, launched globally in 2019. It is positioned as a contemporary successor to the “Kluger”, which was sold in the Japanese market between 2000 and 2007. With limited options for domestically produced large seven-seater SUVs, the Highlander fills an important gap, offering a robust and versatile family vehicle for the Japanese consumer.
Comfort and safety highlighted in the new model
The version of the Highlander that will be distributed throughout Japan is the “Limited ZR Hybrid”, which promises a balance between imposing design, comfort and technology. Its large dimensions and premium features qualify it as a high-end SUV. Check out the main highlights:
- Generous dimensions: Length of 4950 mm, width of 1930 mm and height of 1730 mm, with a wheelbase of 2850 mm.
- Robust design: It features a front that resembles the style of the fifth generation RAV4, complemented by 20-inch tires that reinforce its presence.
- Available colors: Buyers can choose from five body color options.
- Premium and spacious interior: Three-row configuration for seven passengers, seats covered in synthetic leather and an environment designed for comfort.
- Onboard technology: Audio system with 12.3-inch screen as standard, panoramic roof, JBL premium sound system and a color head-up display.
- Cargo capacity: With the third row seats folded down, the vehicle offers approximately 870 liters of luggage space, increasing practicality.
- Advanced engine: 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain, combined with the efficient four-wheel electric drive system (E-Four).
- Driving modes: Selection between Eco, Normal and Sport to adapt performance to different situations and driver preferences.
- Safety features: Includes the Toyota Safety Sense package, automatic parking braking and panoramic view monitor as standard items, ensuring greater protection.
Important considerations about the Japanese version and cost
The price of the Toyota Highlander Limited ZR Hybrid in Japan, including taxes, has been set at 8.6 million yen. It is important to note that the Japanese specification of the vehicle is based on the New Zealand version, which entails some particularities that consumers should consider.
Among the limitations, the multimedia screens that operate in English and the impossibility of using certain software update and integrated navigation functions stand out. Despite these adaptation specifics, the Highlander maintains its strong appeal as a large three-row SUV, a type of vehicle with few direct alternatives in the Japanese market, promising to attract great attention with its arrival across the country.
