From August 1st, the Japanese automotive market will receive the Toyota Highlander SUV, a large model manufactured in the United States. The automaker announced that sales of the vehicle will be expanded to all Toyota dealerships in the country, after an initial period of sale in Tokyo. The suggested price for the only version available, the “Limited ZR Hybrid”, will be 8.6 million yen.
The arrival of an SUV produced in the United States on the Japanese market
The national expansion of sales of the Toyota Highlander represents a significant step for the automaker and for commercial relations between Japan and the United States. The vehicle, designed to meet the demands of families and adventure enthusiasts, has been available from Toyota Mobility Tokyo since April 2, operating under a new trading system between the two countries. This pioneering initiative now extends throughout Japan, offering a new option in the three-row SUV segment.
Trade agreement facilitates new import route for Toyota
The introduction of the Highlander in Japan is the result of an innovative commercial mechanism, based on specific agreements between the two nations. This system allowed Toyota to import and distribute one of its North American-produced flagships directly to the Japanese market, indicating a possible trend toward flexibility in the automotive industry’s global supply chains. The measure could signal future collaborations and the entry of other models made outside of Japan.
Features and positioning of the Toyota Highlander in Japan
The Toyota Highlander is a medium-large SUV that stands out for its large interior space, with the capacity to accommodate up to seven passengers in its three rows of seats. Its “Limited ZR” hybrid configuration promises to combine fuel efficiency with robust performance, suitable for both urban traffic and trails and outdoor adventures. The vehicle aims to serve families who seek versatility, comfort and the renowned durability of the Japanese brand.
- Robust Design:The Highlander’s imposing appearance sets it apart in the Japanese automotive scene, which traditionally favors more compact vehicles.
- Off-Road Capability:Equipped with features that improve its off-road performance, the SUV offers safety and stability on different types of terrain.
- Cozy Interior:The spacious cabin is designed for long journeys, with finishes that provide comfort and a premium experience.
- Hybrid Technology:The hybrid engine reflects Toyota’s commitment to sustainability, offering lower consumption and emissions.
The history of the Highlander and the return of a familiar concept
The Toyota Highlander has a long and successful global trajectory, with its first model launched in the USA in 2001. Since then, it has accumulated more than 3.6 million units sold in the American market until 2025, consolidating itself as a popular choice among families. Interestingly, the vehicle already had a visit to Japan between 2000 and 2007, when it was sold under the name “Kluger”. The return now with the Highlander identity and a hybrid version reflects the evolution of the market and the growing demand for spacious and efficient SUVs.
Toyota’s decision to reintroduce the Highlander in Japan, this time as a US import, underlines the company’s strategy to optimize its global production and diversify its offering to consumers. The Kluger’s previous success, combined with the current appreciation of versatile SUVs and the preference for cleaner technologies, positions the Highlander to capture an important share of the family vehicle segment in the country. The initiative marks not only a product launch, but also a strategic move within the global automotive industry.
