While Flamengo carries out its pre-season in Portugal, the club’s management, together with the technical committee, is attentive to movements in the transfer market. The team seeks to analyze both the arrival of new athletes and possible departures from the current squad, adopting a prudent stance to protect the integrity of the group.

The club’s management understands the importance of making sales to clean up finances and make new investments viable. However, the primary objective is to ensure the cohesion of the squad, which means avoiding the departure of players considered indispensable. This line of action aims to prevent the urgency of filling gaps in sectors that are not the main focus of current planning.

In a recent decision, Flamengo chose to suspend talks with Aston Villa regarding the transfer of Emerson Royal. The only formal offer received was 9 million euros, an amount that the club assessed as insufficient for an athlete of his caliber. Given the lack of progress in negotiations, the full-back, who has a contract until December 2028 and is considered a fundamental player, will remain in the squad for now.

With a significant volume of participations in the current season, Emerson Royal represents the only direct alternative to Varela at right-back, in addition to being able to be used at left-back in times of need. Given the search for reinforcements already established for the left-back, the board chose not to complete the sale. Only a considerably higher and irrefutable proposal could reverse this decision.

Another athlete who attracted market interest is Luiz Araújo. The player is being monitored by Arab football clubs and received a proposal, but Flamengo declined immediate negotiations. The technical committee considers the striker essential for the squad rotation and does not intend to give up this option. Cruzeiro also expressed interest, but the red and black team does not want to strengthen a direct opponent, especially as the teams will meet in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores.

This club’s stance does not imply that Flamengo will not carry out any negotiations in the next transfer window. The institution recognizes the need for departures and has players who want more time on the field, such as Luiz Araújo and Everton Cebolinha. The objective is to reduce the impacts of these transactions as much as possible, focusing only on the sectors previously defined by coach Leonardo Jardim to receive reinforcements.

With regard to new signings, the arrival of reinforcements is one of the priorities for the month of July. Recently, Flamengo’s football director, José Boto, commented on the matter, highlighting the influence of the World Cup on the search for players and the need for prudence. He highlighted that, unlike past windows that involved high costs, the current one has a different context, with the club having more restricted investment power.

“The window only starts on the 19th. It is a particular period for several reasons. The previous two involved a lot of expenditure, and Flamengo does not have unlimited resources. It is essential to understand that this is a different window, given the previously invested capital”, explained Boto in an interview with FlamengoTV. “In a World Cup year, the market only tends to move after the end of the competition, creating a domino effect. We have needs, but we are not desperate. Our goal is to bring in the appropriate reinforcements, which meet the coach’s expectations and raise the level of the team. We will act with serenity and, at the opportune moment, we will make the necessary signings”, added the director.

President Bap, in turn, spoke about the possibility of Flamengo trying big names in the market, mentioning Danilo, from Botafogo, and Luiz Henrique, from Zenit, both called up for the World Cup. He assured that the club will not wait for the end of the tournament to start looking for reinforcements.

“Players generally want to wait for the end of the World Cup to seek greater appreciation. Am I going to wait until July 22nd, the opening date of the window, to sign an athlete of this stature? Will they be ready? Will they not ask for ten days of vacation after the World Cup, if Brazil goes far? Arriving to play in September, and what is in Brazil (Danilo) we don’t know what he wants… there are a series of factors”, pondered Bap during his participation in the Charla Podcast. “There is not a single day at Flamengo in which we do not debate and evaluate positions, succession, and what will happen in six months or a year. We carry out a detailed analysis by sectors. We are constantly observing. Given the level of our squad, we have reached a point where we are not looking for just any reinforcement, but rather ‘the’ reinforcement. He needs to be accessible, his club willing to negotiate, he must want to play with us, and his moment needs to coincide with the window and his own intentions. There are countless variables”, added the president.

Flamengo’s priorities for the transfer window are well defined, with special attention to a midfielder and a center forward, in addition to constant monitoring of options for the left-back. The club even investigated the situation of Thiago Almada. Except in the case of an exceptional market opportunity, the board will initially target young athletes, with a maximum age of 26, who do not represent an excessively high financial investment. The search will be guided by three essential pillars: technical quality, speed and physical health, crucial elements for the intensity required by modern football and for long-term planning.

Flamengo’s board is aware of its investment restrictions during this period, but aims to hand over the new hires to coach Leonardo Jardim as soon as possible to facilitate their adaptation to the group. Furthermore, it is essential that all reinforcements are available for the first leg of the round of 16 of the Libertadores, scheduled for August 12, against Cruzeiro, in Belo Horizonte.
