Tennis player Learner Tien, currently in 17th position in the world rankings, generated great repercussions last Wednesday (02). The 20-year-old athlete released an image of himself in a hospital, surrounded by an unusual amount of snacks: four sandwiches, a portion of chips and two packages containing 20 nuggets each. The hospitalization occurred after the young man fell ill due to stomach discomfort during his match against Marton Fucsovics, valid for the Wimbledon tournament, which required emergency medical attention.

During the clash on Wimbledon’s hallowed grass, Tien requested a break for medical care. During one of the breaks between games, the American surprised everyone by being caught eating a piece of bread directly on the court, in an unusual scene for the sport. However, the effort was not enough to avoid defeat, and he ended up being defeated by his Hungarian opponent by 3 sets to 1, with partials of 7/6(6), 4/6, 7/6(4) and 6/3, being eliminated in the second round of the British Grand Slam. After the game ended, Learner was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Shortly after going to the hospital, the athlete, number 17 in the ATP rankings, was once again the center of attention on social media by sharing the photo in his hospital bed. The image showed the table filled with a large number of fast food items: four sandwiches, a generous portion of fries and two boxes of nuggets. The choice of meal, even after an upset stomach, highlights the intense need for energy replenishment of high-performance athletes, who after the stress and extreme physical effort of a Grand Slam match, seek quick calories for recovery.

Learner Tien is emerging as one of the great promises of the new generation of world tennis, as is Brazilian João Fonseca. Its rise has been remarkable in recent months; in January, at the Australian Open, he became the youngest American player to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick’s feat in 2002. Just four months later, his career reached another milestone when he won his first title, the ATP 250 in Geneva, a feat that propelled him into the group of the 20 best tennis players in the world.
