Julian Nagelsmann left command of the Germany national team this Friday (3), becoming the eighth coach to lose his position due to the 2026 World Cup. The German coach’s departure adds to a series of dismissals that include direct dismissals, requests for resignation and termination of contracts, motivated by early eliminations and below-expected performances in the group stage. The high pressure of the global tournament demonstrates how negative results can lead to immediate and drastic changes in national coaching teams.

Frenchman Sabri Lamouchi was the first to step down during the tournament. He was fired as head of Tunisia after a 5-1 defeat to Sweden in the first round. Despite his compatriot Hervé Renard taking over the team afterwards, the African team was unable to reverse the situation and was eliminated with two more defeats in the first phase.

After the end of the group stage, other important names said goodbye. Hong Myung-bo resigned from his post in South Korea amid intense criticism and accusations of “incompetence” made publicly by the country’s president. Also in Group A, Miroslav Koubek chose to leave command of the Czech Republic after a winless campaign in three matches.

Still in the group stage, two more coaches announced their departures. Steve Clarke resigned from Scotland after the 3-0 defeat to Brazil, a result that sealed the European team’s early elimination. Marcelo Bielsa also left command of Uruguay, which had a disappointing performance and ended its participation in the World Cup with just two draws.

In the eliminatory stage, the flow of exits continued. Ronald Koeman resigned from the Netherlands shortly after their elimination on penalties against Morocco. Sebastián Beccacece said goodbye to Ecuador after a 2-0 defeat to Mexico, also in the round of 16 stage. Finally, Julian Nagelsmann handed over the job to Germany, which was eliminated on penalties by Paraguay.
