7 essential actions to protect your cell phone beyond antivirus

The use of antivirus software on all devices was common in the early days of personal computing, but modern smartphones are designed with a high level of security. Both Apple and Google build in comprehensive protections, making phones less susceptible to traditional malware than notebooks or desktop computers.

Today, the main threat to smartphones is often not malware. Instead, phishing messages, fraudulent websites and account takeover scams emerge as the biggest dangers. Therefore, there are more effective approaches to improving the security of your mobile device than purchasing antivirus software.

Your device already does most of the protection work. Both iPhones and Android devices are structured to keep applications isolated from each other. An application can generally only access the information and resources that you have given permission to, making it difficult for a malicious application to operate on the rest of the system.

Apple takes a particularly restrictive stance. Applications must be made available through the App Store, where they undergo a rigorous review process before being published. The company also strictly controls what apps can do after installation.

This approach by Apple, while beneficial for security, also limits the functionality of antivirus apps on iPhones. Unlike Windows software, mobile security applications generally cannot analyze the entire operating system because Apple restricts this level of access.

Android, on the other hand, provides users with more freedom, which, in turn, carries a slightly greater risk. It is possible to install applications from outside the Google Play Store, a practice known as sideloading, which is often the source of malware infections. However, Android includes several built-in protections, such as Google Play Protect, application permission controls, and regular security updates to fix vulnerabilities.

Additionally, the Google Play Store periodically removes apps that no longer meet current security standards, further strengthening protection.

None of this means that cell phones are completely invulnerable. Security researchers are constantly discovering new flaws, and cyber criminals are constantly looking for ways to exploit them. However, compared to computers from about a decade ago, today’s smartphones are much harder targets, which directs criminals’ efforts to other areas.

The security of your accounts is more critical than that of the device itself

Losing access to an account as a result of a mistake undoubtedly represents a greater cybersecurity risk than a malware infection on a cell phone. Phishing messages, fake delivery notices, fraudulent calls and forged login pages have become the most common ways criminals target smartphone users.

The tactic is usually simple: a message creates a sense of urgency and prompts you to click a link, log into an account, or confirm a payment. The site is often convincing enough, and many people don’t realize the fraud until their credentials have already been stolen.

This type of attack, known as social engineering, has become increasingly common because exploiting the human factor is often easier than finding a technical vulnerability. The strong security protections built into modern smartphones unfortunately cannot prevent someone from voluntarily entering a password on a fake website.

For this reason, many security experts advocate phishing awareness, the use of strong passwords, and two-factor authentication, just as they do for malware protection. For the general population, protecting your accounts is more important than worrying about whether your cell phone is infected with a virus.

Seven recommended habits to protect your mobile device

If you’re looking for the biggest return on security, it’s more effective to focus on the actions that effectively prevent the most intrusions, leaving aside the search for the perfect antivirus application.

  • Keep phones and apps always up to date.
  • Download software exclusively from official stores (App Store or Google Play).
  • Review each app’s permissions and disable unnecessary access (for example, most apps don’t need your location data).
  • Use strong, unique passwords for your most important accounts.
  • Store credentials in a trusted password manager like Bitwarden or 1Password.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (preferably not via SMS) or security keys when available.
  • Be wary of unexpected messages, links and attachments.

These actions, although simple and not always exciting, are the ones that generate the most significant and consistent impact on digital security.

Situations where a mobile security app can be useful

For most users, keeping the device updated, downloading applications from official sources and being cautious online is enough to ensure good security and continue with daily activities.

There are exceptions, however. If you’re the type of person who installs Android apps from external sources, downloads files from unverified websites, or likes to try out software that isn’t available on Google Play, additional security tools can give you added peace of mind. The further you venture beyond the protections built into modern smartphones, the more useful additional security tools become.
