Nvidia, one of the most influential names in the artificial intelligence and graphics card sector, announced on Monday, March 16, an important update to its DLSS technology. This feature, which improves the graphical quality of games, promises a significant leap in visual performance, but is already raising questions among the gaming community.

Since its introduction with Nvidia graphics cards in 2019, DLSS has been a valued tool in the video game industry. It works as a graphics rendering acceleration option, using artificial intelligence to optimize games. By enabling DLSS on supported titles, players will notice a substantial increase in performance, with sharper images and a higher frame rate per second. Over the years, the technology has evolved, incorporating features such as “frame generation” in DLSS 4, for greater fluidity, and “ray tracing”, which simulates natural lighting in a more realistic way.

Nvidia’s most significant advance in the graphics sector

Eight years after the launch of the first version of DLSS, Nvidia announced this Monday the arrival of DLSS 5, scheduled for next autumn in the northern hemisphere. The company classifies the innovation as “the brand’s most significant advancement in the computer graphics sector since the launch of ray tracing in 2018”, according to a press release that received widespread attention.

With DLSS 5, Nvidia introduces a first-of-its-kind rendering model that uses a real-time neural engine. This system allows each pixel to display photorealistic lighting and tangible rendering. The company claims the new technology bridges the gap between the virtual and the real, empowering game developers to deliver visuals never before seen on PCs, comparable only to those achieved by the Hollywood film industry.

Jensen Huang, CEO and founder of Nvidia, likened the launch to a “ChatGPT moment in graphics.” He highlighted that DLSS 5 combines developers’ expertise with generative artificial intelligence, promoting a “spectacular leap in graphics” without compromising artists’ creativity and control over their works.

Nvidia’s presentation included a series of stunning images from “enhanced” games such as Resident Evil Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield and FC Sports 25. The demonstrations revealed that both environments and characters gain depth and intensity, and the overall lighting of scenes reaches an unprecedented level of realism. The improvement is particularly notable in Starfield (2023), where the astronauts’ faces look almost real.

Nvidia details that the AI model is trained to understand the semantic complexity of scenes, including elements such as characters, hair, fabrics and skin, in addition to ambient lighting conditions. All of this is done by analyzing a single image. DLSS 5 then uses this in-depth knowledge to generate accurate images while maintaining the original structure of the scene. The technology giant has already announced partnerships with Capcom, Bethesda and Ubisoft, which will integrate the technology into their future and already released games, such as Resident Evil Requiem, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Player reviews question the impact of DLSS 5 on game creation

Despite Nvidia’s enthusiasm, the news was not entirely well received by gamers around the world. The first criticisms emerged on social media, with some fearing that DLSS 5 could distort the work of game developers, replacing it with a standardized artistic style. One player commented: “Nvidia just spit in the face of the entire industry.” Another quipped that “studios will be even lazier if AI can add textures.” It is worth mentioning that, according to a video published by Nvidia, the face of Grace, one of the main characters in Resident Evil Requiem, appears completely different with DLSS 5.

An analysis carried out by Digital Foundry, a vehicle specialized in graphics technology, offers a counterpoint. After a detailed presentation by Nvidia, the site concluded that DLSS 5 does not modify the 3D or 2D elements of games, limiting its action to pixel lighting. Therefore, generative AI would not be employed in content creation itself. However, it is likely that DLSS 5 will not be accessible to all players. Digital Foundry reported that the demonstration was run on two RTX 5090 video cards, very high-performance models. A single plate of this caliber has an official price of 2,099 euros and, with the current shortage, it could cost more than 3,100 euros on the market.
