Recently, Neill had publicly shared his recovery from cancer after a five-year period of treatment. He attributed the disease’s remission to an innovative gene therapy that worked to modify his immune system.
In the year 2023, in his memoirs, Neill himself had reported being “possibly dying”, after being diagnosed with stage three non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

During an interview broadcast on Channel 7 in Australia last weekend, the actor detailed his experience of living with the disease for five years. He mentioned that the chemotherapy had lost its effectiveness, describing the situation: “I was disoriented and felt like I was on the way out, which was obviously not ideal.”
Neill subsequently underwent a groundbreaking therapy called CAR-T. This method uses the patient’s own defense cells, which are genetically modified in the laboratory to combat cancer cells. He expressed his relief by stating, “I just had a CT scan and I don’t have cancer. It’s extraordinary.”
The actor had appealed to Australia’s federal and state governments to allocate more resources to financing this type of treatment. The objective was to make it more accessible to other patients with the same disease in the country.
Sam Neill began his career in the 1970s and has accumulated dozens of notable works in both film and television. Among his best-known projects are the series “Peaky Blinders” and the acclaimed film “The Piano”.
