Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez reached a historic milestone on Wednesday, July 15, by becoming the goalkeeper with the most appearances for the Argentina national team in World Cups. By participating in the match against England, the player surpassed Ubaldo Fillol’s previous mark, now totaling 14 World Cup appearances.
Before setting the new record, Martínez had equaled Sergio Romero’s feat in the quarter-finals of the tournament, in a game against Switzerland. With his recent participation, the 2022 champion goalkeeper surpassed Ubaldo Fillol, who played 13 games for the national team in three editions of the World Cup, including the victorious campaign in 1978, a legacy that Dibu now extends with his own story.
Even with the world title won in 2022, this is only Dibu Martínez’s second participation in a World Cup. The archer divided his 14 performances, with seven of them taking place in Qatar and the other seven in the current edition of the championship, which is being hosted jointly by Mexico, the United States and Canada.
- Dibu Martínez: 14 games
- Ubaldo Fillol: 13 games
- Sergio Romero: 12 games
