Thousands of fans of the Xbox platform turned to one of Microsoft’s main official feedback channels to express deep discontent at theTuesday, July 14, 2026. The movement is a direct protest against the series of layoffs and the closure of studios promoted by the technology giant in its gaming division, highlighting the community’s growing dissatisfaction with the company’s strategic decisions.
A specific topic, created on the Xbox Player Voice forum, quickly gained prominence, accumulating more than 3,000 votes and 600 comments. The main demand from users is clear: that Microsoft stop staff cuts and urgently review its strategy for the game development area, which has been marked by continuous restructuring in recent years, directly impacting the creation ecosystem and players’ confidence.
The publication was initiated by Witt Yao, who considered the recent layoffs of approximately 3,200 employees linked to Xbox “unacceptable”. This wave of cuts directly affected teams from several renowned studios, such as Activision, Bethesda, Blizzard, King, Mojang, Obsidian, id Software and Xbox Game Studios themselves.
In his statement, Yao highlighted the seriousness of the situation: “The layoff of 3,200 workers at Xbox (covering Activision, Bethesda/ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, Mojang, Obsidian, id Software and Xbox Game Studios) is unacceptable. This continues a pattern that has already led to more than 10,000 layoffs at Xbox in just two years. Several studios have been closed or had their future put at risk (Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Undead Labs, Ninja Theory, Tango Gameworks, Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Games and Roundhouse Studios), and several games have been cancelled. Developers and players agree this cannot continue.”
Among other demands, Yao asked Microsoft to stop announcing games without the intention of releasing them, specifically citing the cases of State of Decay 3 and Senua, which were mentioned again in June. The protest author also openly criticized the payment of bonuses to executives after the mass layoffs and argued that the company should reduce its incessant pursuit of profit growth. This change would allow studios greater freedom to develop innovative games, without the constant risk of closure.
Xbox Community discusses the future and holds leadership accountable
The thread created by Yao received rapid and significant support from other members of the gaming community. One of the most voted comments highlighted that the exclusive focus on sequels and already established franchises represents a “slow death” for the Xbox brand. According to the user, the true growth of the platform depends on the ability to take risks and invest in new and original ideas.
Another forum participant held Xbox leadership directly responsible for the layoffs. The commentary emphasized that the difficulty in converting the work of talented developers into profitable results is primarily a management problem, not a failure of employees or the projects themselves. This perspective suggests that the layoffs are a reflection of poor strategic decisions at the company’s top level.
Although Xbox Player Voice was created precisely to welcome suggestions from the community and encourage dialogue, the final decision on whether or not to respond to criticism rests exclusively with Microsoft. The protests come just two weeks after the most recent round of cuts at the company, which impacted around 3,200 professionals, and also put into question the future of its own studios such as Double Fine, Undead Labs and Ninja Theory, all acquired by Microsoft over the last decade.
