Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will have a limited theatrical release to compete for an Oscar

The film “Avatar Aang: The Legend of Aang” will have a theatrical release limited to a few cities, with screenings scheduled between July 24th and 30th, reversing a previous decision to release exclusively on streaming platforms.

Paramount had initially announced, in 2021, the development of a feature film from the ‘Avatar’ franchise to be shown in movie theaters. It was later confirmed that the production would be a continuation of the original Nickelodeon series, showing the classic characters in their adult phase. However, plans changed drastically when the distributor canceled the theatrical release, opting to make the film available directly on the Paramount+ streaming service.

However, despite the dissatisfaction of admirers who were waiting for Aang’s return to the big screen, something new emerged. The film will be shown on a very restricted circuit, in parallel with its release on Paramount+ later this month. The screenings are confirmed for Los Angeles and New York, with three daily sessions that will take place between July 24th and 30th, specifically at AMC Burbank 8, in Los Angeles, and at AMC Empire 25, in Manhattan.

The strategy behind this restricted screening is to ensure the film’s qualification for important film industry awards. By meeting theatrical screening requirements, Paramount will be able to submit “Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender” in the best animated film category for the next Oscars. In addition to the limited screenings, there will be a special screening during San Diego Comic-Con, also scheduled for July 24th.

Still, the extremely limited nature of the release led to some frustration, especially since the initial expectation was for wider theatrical distribution. The scenario became even more complicated with the complete leak of the film at the beginning of this year, which allowed many fans to have access to the work months before the official date. In response to this situation, Paramount brought forward the release, which was originally scheduled for October 2026.
