In a context where arguments, aggressions and even fatalities often mark the outcome of traffic accidents, a scene recorded on Tuesday, June 23, went viral on social media, offering a breather from this reality. In Camboriú, on the coast of Santa Catarina, a collision between two vehicles culminated in a 32-second hug between the drivers, an unusual moment that stands out as an example of humanity on the roads.
In the last twelve months, several incidents of traffic violence were documented by surveillance systems in several locations in Brazil: in São Paulo, two people lost their lives in clashes, and a motorcyclist was fatally run over.
In the city of Sorocaba, in the interior of São Paulo, there were reports of attacks on elderly people, disagreements that resulted in stabbings, run-overs and even incidents with firearms.
Contrary to this tendency of conflicts, the welcoming gesture took place on the aforementioned date. Around noon, on a busy avenue in Camboriú, the driver of the front vehicle slowed down to make a turn, and the driver following him, due to distraction, was unable to brake in time, resulting in a low-intensity collision.
Paulo Amaral, a 37-year-old businessman and driver of the affected car, reported that his initial priority was to check the condition of his daughter, who was traveling in the back seat. After verifying that the child was unharmed, he got out to interact with the other driver. As he approached, he noticed that Eduardo Santos, a 34-year-old tax inspector, seemed shaken and offered a hug.
Eduardo, who works as a tax inspector at Camboriú City Hall and also works as a pastor, accepted the gesture. He shared that he was dealing with recent grief over the loss of his father, as well as facing financial challenges and everyday personal issues. Paulo interpreted that, at that moment, the hug offered was precisely the support that Eduardo needed.
“I experienced a feeling of great well-being. I felt immense comfort and a deep welcome. It was, as Paulo mentioned, an instant orchestrated by a greater force. In moments of adversity, God reserves an opportunity like this for us”, stated Eduardo Santos.
The pair remained hugged for 32 seconds. Later, on the sidewalk, Paulo Amaral proposed a prayer, and Eduardo agreed. For both, the event had a profound spiritual content. They reported finding comfort and support during the dialogue, and consider the moment to be divine providence.
Material damage resulting from the collision was minimized. Auto insurance covered the cost of vehicle repairs, while the incident itself gained widespread visibility.
The story was released thanks to Silvio, a bricklayer who was away from his activities due to shoulder inflammation. Because of his condition, he habitually monitored footage from municipal security cameras. By witnessing the accident in real time, he anticipated a fight between the drivers, a common scenario in such situations. However, he witnessed the hug.
“My expectation was that they would get out of the cars to argue, as so many do. But that’s not what happened. It was a different outcome, the opposite. And that’s how it should be. Friendly coexistence should prevail in traffic”, declared Silvio.
Silvio shared the recording with his family, and the image quickly reached digital platforms. A few days later, the protagonists of what happened reunited. Paulo revealed that he had never met Eduardo before the accident, and that from that moment on, a friendship emerged. For him, the welcoming gesture sowed an idea capable of inspiring many.
“Now, a great friendship has been established. I am convinced that this seed will blossom, transforming into a beautiful and robust tree”, expressed Paulo.
