Xbox prepares conversion of physical games to digital by July amid criticism from Sony
Microsoft did not launch the Positron program in the period that some speculations indicated, but reliable sources point out that the functionality to convert Xbox game discs to digital format should be presented to the public before the end of July. At a strategic moment, with Sony facing severe criticism for the progressive abandonment of physical games on the PlayStation 5, Microsoft’s initiative promises to transform physical media into digital licenses for Xbox consoles.
Journalist Jez Corden, known for his information about the Xbox universe, had already anticipated that Microsoft would reveal a system to transform physical games into digital ones. Although the supposed “Positron” project has not yet been made official, an internal source is optimistic about the imminent announcement. In a recent podcast, Corden detailed that by July 31, Xbox console owners should be aware of options for preserving their physical game collections.

Corden shared the latest news with enthusiasts during the XB2 broadcast, correcting his previous predictions. He confirmed that Microsoft is defining the best public relations approach to the topic, with the expectation that all details will be made public by the end of the month.

Sony faces criticism and makes room for Microsoft’s strategy
Sony has been the target of widespread dissatisfaction after announcing the reduction in production of PS5 discs from 2028. The PlayStation division has received many complaints on its social platforms due to its growing focus on the universe of digital games. With reports indicating that even developers are unhappy, rival Microsoft identifies a unique opportunity to strengthen its position in the market.
Reports from May 2026 were the first to discuss Microsoft’s disc-to-digital format initiative. Back in July, information from internal sources indicated that the feature began to be tested on the Xbox Series X and S models. It is likely that a greater number of players will be able to access Positron soon.

The expectation is that inserting a disc into Xbox consoles will generate a digital license for the game. This way, users could maintain the flexibility to sell or exchange physical media, as the digital license would be linked to a single Microsoft account at a time. The title, previously restricted to physical format, would now be accessible for download and play on multiple devices.
What are the possible restrictions of the Positron program
Some aspects of the program still remain unclear from Microsoft. It is rumored that Positron support would be limited to Xbox One games and newer releases, which would generate frustration among fans of the original Xbox and Xbox 360. Even with this possibility, many physical media collectors may see the conversion as just a temporary reprieve from the inevitable all-digital future.

So far, Sony has not released any leaks about a similar program. Both the PlayStation 6, with its long-awaited backwards compatibility, and Project Helix are expected to launch without optical disc drives. In this scenario, Microsoft’s Positron could become a decisive attraction to win over loyal PlayStation users disappointed with the end of discs on the PS5, directing them to the new Xbox consoles.
