IOS 27 beta update indicates freeing up more RAM for demanding apps on iPhones

A discreet change, detected in the beta 3 version of the iOS 27 operating system, could bring significant advantages to iPhone users who use high-consumption applications. This new test build apparently raised the limit of RAM accessible to applications, a restriction that had long been considered one of the platform’s strictest points.

In practice, the measure suggests that advanced games, emulators, video editing programs, 3D modeling tools and other large applications will have more space to operate. This can result in fewer unexpected process terminations or constant content reloads.

Context of RAM memory restrictions on Apple systems

Even with the latest iPhone models equipped with considerable amounts of RAM, iOS has always imposed strict limits on how much of that memory each app can consume.

Apple itself offers developers a feature called “Increased Memory Limit”, which allows certain programs to request more memory when the device’s hardware is compatible.

However, the operating system continued to apply important restrictions to ensure the general stability and battery life of the devices.

In reports over the past few months, developers have noticed unusual scenarios. In certain recent versions of iPadOS, for example, applications that could previously use around 6 GB of RAM had their access reduced to approximately 3 GB, which created difficulties for more robust software.

New features observed in iOS 27 beta 3 and their implications

According to findings shared by developers and enthusiasts participating in testing beta versions of the system, iOS 27 beta 3 appears to authorize applications to overcome the usual barrier, which remained between 6 GB and 7 GB of available memory.

Observations indicate that some programs have been able to access more than 6 GB of RAM on compatible devices, something that was not previously feasible.

Although Apple has not officially announced this change in the release notes, it is common for adjustments of this nature to appear silently during the system’s testing phase.

Users who will notice performance improvements on their iPhone

The new feature should not generate major changes for those who use the iPhone mainly for social networks, messaging applications, streaming services and internet browsing. These activities already operate satisfactorily with current memory limits.

The biggest beneficiaries will be users who perform more complex tasks, including:

  • Games with high quality graphics
  • Modern console emulators
  • Video editing apps
  • 3D modeling and rendering software
  • Artificial intelligence tools run locally

With greater memory availability, applications can keep a greater amount of data loaded simultaneously, reducing the occurrence of crashes and the need to constantly reload elements.

The relevance of the change for the evolution of Apple Intelligence

This decision also aligns with the direction Apple has taken with its artificial intelligence capabilities.

Certain advanced features of the new Siri, for example, already require devices with at least 12 GB of RAM, such as the latest models in the iPhone 17 Pro line and the iPhone Air.

This requirement is due to the fact that AI models running directly on the device require a significantly greater amount of memory to function efficiently.

By relaxing RAM limits for apps, Apple is setting the stage for a new generation of more sophisticated software, especially those that rely on local artificial intelligence processing.

Reservations about the new features of iOS 27 in beta phase

Since this change was identified in a beta release, there is no guarantee that it will be implemented in exactly the same way in the final version of iOS 27.

Apple often experiments with different approaches during the development cycle, and some of them may be modified or even removed before the official release.

Even so, the discovery demonstrates the company’s continued effort to optimize the use of the latest iPhones’ hardware. For users of professional applications or high-end games, any increase in available RAM can mean a noticeable improvement in the daily use experience.
