Monaco, under Filipe Luís, will face a significant loss in their squad before the start of the season. Newcastle finalized the signing of 20-year-old midfielder Aladji Bamba, in a transaction valued at up to 40 million euros (approximately R$260 million), taking away one of the most promising revelations on their team from the French club.

This negotiation represents an important strategic move for both teams in the market. While Newcastle is adding a midfielder with great potential to reformulate its midfield after the departure of Sandro Tonali, Monaco sees the departure of a young player who stood out at the base and had earned space in the first team in his first season as a professional.

The arrival of Aladji Bamba into Newcastle’s strategy

The acquisition of Bamba aligns perfectly with the profile of reinforcements that Newcastle is looking for in this transfer window. After negotiating Tonali with Tottenham, the English club started to focus on young athletes, with great room for development and considerable potential for appreciation in the future.

Having spent time with France’s youth teams, Bamba made his professional debut last season and quickly attracted attention for his performances in Ligue 1. Throughout the campaign, he played 25 matches for Monaco and demonstrated characteristics that aroused strong interest from the English board.

Among the midfielders in the competition who played for at least 500 minutes, the Frenchman was among the best in terms of duels won, tackles, completed dribbles and aerial contests. In addition to his ability to recover balls, he also showed the quality to lead the game under pressure and contribute to the offensive construction of plays.

Although his main position is as a midfielder, Aladji Bamba can also play in more advanced roles in midfield, offering versatility to coach Eddie Howe. The expectation, however, is that his adaptation will occur gradually, considering that the player only has one season of experience in professional football.

This reinforcement is the fourth signed by Newcastle in this 2026 window, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, midfielder Sean Steur and striker Bazoumana Touré. All of these new athletes are 20 years old or younger, which reinforces the clear change in strategy adopted by the club to invest in young talent for the future.

Bamba’s departure impacts Monaco’s squad under Filipe Luís

From a French point of view, the negotiation marks the departure of an athlete who was beginning to establish himself as a crucial piece in Monaco’s squad. A graduate of the club’s youth categories, Bamba debuted in the main team in August 2025 and consolidated his position throughout the season. Even with little experience, he ended the year as one of Ligue 1’s main revelations.

His departure reduces the options available to Filipe Luís’ team in the midfield sector and interrupts the progress of a player who was considered a valuable asset, both for the sporting and financial future of the Monegasque club.

The sale, however, follows a business model frequently adopted by Monaco in recent years: identifying and developing young talents, providing them with space in the main team and, subsequently, negotiating them with major European clubs after their market value.
