Grand Theft Auto VI is still scheduled to reach stores on November 19, 2026, according to Take-Two Interactive, owner of Rockstar Games. The company reaffirmed the date after a new delay moved the game into the northern hemisphere’s autumn, and it first confirmed November 19 in May 2026.

The game was originally planned for autumn 2025. The release window then moved to May 26, 2026, before the latest change to November 19. Analysts had to rework their earnings projections for the next fiscal year, since the game is one of the company’s main revenue drivers.

Rockstar says the console version needs more polish

Rockstar said the extra time was needed to refine the game to a quality level that matches public expectations. The pressure is high, because its predecessor, Grand Theft Auto V, had nearly 230 million units sold in, according to Take-Two’s 2026 proxy statement. The first phase will launch only on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said the team needs more time to polish a virtual world of unprecedented complexity. The company follows the same approach with its big projects, as it did with Red Dead Redemption 2, which also faced delays and earned more than US$ 725 million in its first weekend. In practice, management puts technical excellence and the absence of serious flaws ahead of commercial pressure.

Shares move and rivals gain room on the release calendar

Take-Two’s shares moved right after the quarterly earnings report, reflecting investor anxiety over profits pushed back by the new date. The date change for a product with this commercial weight triggered an immediate reaction on the stock market. Other titles in the catalog now have to keep cash flowing until the launch.

With the game absent in early next year, other large developers gain room. Competitors can move major releases and avoid a head-to-head fight for sales, media attention and shelf space. Ubisoft, Electronic Arts and Sony studios appear as examples of companies getting a less crowded calendar.

First female lead in the 3D era joins Jason as co-protagonist

For the first time in the series’ 3D era, players will control a female lead named Lucia. She shares the spotlight with Jason, in a pair of criminals that recalls the real story of Bonnie and Clyde. The writers promise a plot centered on cooperation, urban survival and the tensions of a couple on the run trying to rise in the criminal underworld.

Players will switch between the two characters constantly, which changes how campaign missions are played. They must manage the skills and positioning of both at once during police chases and bank robberies. The story also deals with loyalty, betrayal and the consequences of moral choices in a hostile environment.

Leonida, a satirical Florida, runs on an upgraded RAGE engine

The main setting is Leonida, a satirical and colorful version of contemporary Florida. Vice City returns, but drops the 1980s neon look to portray the era of the internet, digital influencers and viral culture. The map is expected to be the most diverse Rockstar has built, with metropolises, alligator-filled swamps and inland towns.

The team uses the latest version of Rockstar’s proprietary RAGE graphics engine. The main innovations expected for the city include:

  • Real-time global lighting, with reflections in puddles, building glass and vehicle bodywork.
  • Advanced fluid physics, affecting boat navigation and character movement in flooded areas.
  • Improved artificial intelligence for pedestrians, with daily routines and varied reactions for each resident.
  • More detailed body animations and facial expressions in the main story dialogues.

No release date yet for the PC version

PC players will have to wait again, as they do with other titles in the series. Take-Two’s announcement did not mention a PC version, and the company keeps its launch focus on standardized consoles. That choice simplifies code optimization and lowers the risk of failures on the global release day.

When the PC version arrives, it should bring unlocked frame rates, ultrawide resolution support and room for community mods. On Thursday, November 5, 2026, Rockstar also released 39 new screenshots of Vice City and Leonida. Rockstar confirmed that pre-loading starts November 10 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a download of up to 212 GB.
