The Asian automotive industry has just registered a new mass recall involving light commercial vehicles essential to the local economy. The manufacturer Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. has officially launched a repair campaign that directly affects 298,748 units running on the streets and roads of Japan. The focus of this mechanical intervention is concentrated on a fundamental electrical component, whose structural failure has the capacity to completely immobilize cargo vehicles.

The official statement was delivered directly to authorities at the Japanese government’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, complying with the country’s strict road safety protocols. The technical documentation points out that the main risk does not involve accidents on the move, but rather the impossibility of starting the starter motor. This situation leaves drivers and workers stranded before they even begin their daily transport journeys.

Compact utility vehicles, known in the Asian market as mini trucks or Kei category vehicles, represent the backbone of last-mile logistics, agriculture and small businesses in Japanese cities. Any interruption in the operation of this fleet generates an immediate ripple effect on the delivery of goods and the provision of basic services. For this reason, the urgency in resolving the electrical defect became a top priority for the automaker’s management.

Technical details about the vulnerability in the power system

The engineering diagnosis revealed that the Achilles heel of these almost 300,000 vehicles lies in the screws responsible for fixing the battery’s negative terminal. The technical team discovered an inadequacy in the original design of the housing structure for this part, which fails to isolate the metallic components against the relentless action of humidity. During rainy days or when crossing puddles of water, constant splashes directly hit the electrical compartment.

When water repeatedly accumulates at the base of the terminal, a silent and aggressive process of oxidation of the fixing parts begins. Premature corrosion weakens the structural integrity of the metal, causing screws to lose their ability to keep the cable firmly connected to the power source. Without adequate electrical contact, the current flow necessary to wake the thruster is completely interrupted.

With continued wear and tear, the oxidized part may simply break apart under the normal vibration of everyday use on potholed streets or country roads. By the time the report was filed with government bodies, the dealership network had already documented 27 real cases of customers who were unable to start their vehicles. Official records confirm the total absence of collisions, injuries or fatalities resulting from this specific anomaly.

Sharing platforms and the list of models called up

A hallmark of the Japanese automotive sector is the strong collaboration between different brands, a practice known as Original Equipment manufacturing. In this industrial arrangement, Daihatsu acts as the main assembler, developing and building vehicles on its assembly lines, and then passing them on to other giants in the market. These partner companies simply apply their logos and visual identities before sending the batches to the storefronts.

This shared production strategy explains why a design error in a single factory ends up reaching the catalogs of competing brands. Consumers who purchased these small cargo trucks need to check the licensing documents to confirm that the chassis falls within the risk window. The call covers units assembled over an extensive period, between December 3, 2021 and July 4, 2025.

To facilitate identification by owners and fleet owners, transit authorities published the exact list of affected commercial nomenclatures. The list includes the following lightweight utility versions:

  • Daihatsu Hijet Truck, the original model that serves as the structural basis for the entire family of light commercial vehicles involved in the case.
  • Toyota Pixis Truck, variant sold by the largest automaker in the world through a direct supply agreement.
  • Subaru Sambar Truck, traditional version in the cargo segment that also uses the platform and mechanics of the partner manufacturer.

Engineering solution developed to shield the compartment

The manufacturer’s response to definitively remedy the risk of electrical blackouts involves a physical update to the engine compartment of all listed units. Engineers have designed a new protective cover with superior sealing properties, created exclusively to isolate the negative pole of the battery. This physical barrier will prevent water projected from the tires or from bad weather from reaching the sensitive metal connections.

Simply installing a waterproof cover would not be enough for vehicles that have been running for months or years and may have hidden oxidation. Repair protocol requires dealership mechanics to discard all old mounting bolts, regardless of the visual condition of the part. New components, manufactured with reinforced anti-corrosion treatment, will be installed before closing the compartment with the new seal.

The entire technical procedure, which includes specialized labor and replacement of parts, will be fully paid for by the manufacturer’s guarantee fund. The end customer will not incur any type of financial expense when leaving the vehicle at the authorized workshop. The estimated time for completing the service is considered short, allowing self-employed workers to return to their commercial activities on the same day.

Essential guidance for drivers and fleet owners

Direct communication with customers has already started to be launched through registered letters, emails and notices in the official applications of the respective brands. Owners of Daihatsu Hijet, Toyota Pixis and Subaru Sambar models should schedule service quickly at the technical assistance network closest to their homes or operating bases. Ignoring the call means taking the risk of losing days of work due to an inoperative vehicle in the garage.

Automotive maintenance experts recommend that, until the appointment date, drivers avoid washing the engine compartment with high pressure jets. Crossing flooded sections must be done with extra caution to minimize exposure of the electrical system to extreme humidity. Temporary prevention helps ensure that the utility continues to start normally until it receives the definitive factory update.
