Midwest Poultry Services, a poultry company based in Texas, has begun recalling approximately 1.6 million dozen eggs in the United States. The action, communicated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on July 23, 2026, aims to prevent risks to public health due to possible contamination by Salmonella Enteritidis. The measure affects white and brown eggs from free-range chickens.

The risk of Salmonella Enteritidis to human health

Salmonella Enteritidis is a bacteria widely known for causing food poisoning. When ingested, it can cause a series of unpleasant symptoms, including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and severe abdominal pain. In more vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems, the infection can worsen and, in rare cases, lead to serious complications or even death. Contamination in eggs occurs when infected hens transmit the bacteria into the egg before the shell forms, making the food a vector.

Details of products under alert and distribution locations

The recalled eggs were produced at the Midwest Poultry Services facility located in Texas. They were widely distributed to large supermarket chains in several regions of the United States. Consumers should carefully check the information on packaging to identify the specific batches that are under the recall alert.

Among the supermarket chains and states that received the affected products, the following stand out:

  • Kroger: stores located in the states of Texas and Louisiana.
  • Brookshire Grocery: stores in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Mississippi.

How the FDA Monitors Food Safety

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plays a critical role in protecting public health by establishing and enforcing safety standards for a wide range of food products. In situations of suspected or confirmed contamination, such as the current incident involving eggs, the agency acts rigorously, issuing alerts and coordinating recalls to ensure that potentially dangerous products are removed from the market. This work is essential to maintaining consumer trust and minimizing large-scale health risks.

Guidance for consumers who purchased recalled eggs

For those who purchased eggs from the affected brands and batches in the supermarket chains mentioned, the recommendation is categorical: do not consume them. Ideally, eggs should be disposed of immediately in safe bins or, alternatively, taken back to the point of sale for a refund. The FDA also advises that all surfaces that may have come into contact with the eggs, such as countertops, utensils and refrigerators, be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to prevent the possible spread of the bacteria.

The importance of inspection and prevention in the food industry

This recent incident with Midwest Poultry Services emphasizes the crucial importance of strict quality controls at every step of the food production chain. Active oversight by regulatory bodies, such as the FDA, is essential to identify and mitigate risks before they cause public health problems. Furthermore, Salmonella contamination in everyday consumer products such as eggs highlights the continued need for consumer education campaigns on safe food handling and proper hygiene practices in the kitchen.
