The preparation of Formula 1 drivers is intense, combining strength training, reflex training, cardiovascular activities and the use of simulators, all to ensure maximum physical and mental performance in races. On July 30, 2026, Gabriel Bortoleto, responding to an invitation from the Quadrant channel, created by Lando Norris, 2025 champion, invited two content creators to try out his routine, and the video went viral on digital platforms.
Although the audiovisual material was released in mid-July, its popularity has increased considerably in recent days, especially due to a specific part that shows Bortoleto excelling in cervical training. Influencers Jack Joseph and Ethan Payne, members of the Quadrant channel, faced great difficulties when trying to replicate the Brazilian athlete’s movements.
Training for the neck and neck region is crucial in a driver’s preparation, as it strengthens these muscles to withstand high G forces. These forces are generated in the car and in the competitor’s body during races, especially at high speed and in faster maneuvers.
During certain phases of the race, the effect of G-forces makes a driver’s head and helmet appear to weigh nearly five times their original weight. The intense dedication to this type of exercise is the reason why pilots, including women, generally have more developed cervical muscles compared to the general population. This physical distinction becomes even more evident when looking at athletes in the category who have already retired.
In addition to the neck challenge, Bortoleto subjected Joseph and Payne to other tests. They participated in a reflex test using tennis balls, faced an exercise bike with high resistance and operated a Formula 1 simulator. The duo’s experience with the Audi driver also included attempts at cooking, immersion in a bathtub with ice water and a game of padel tennis, a sport that has gained popularity among several F1 drivers.
