The fight for space among compact electric cars in the global market is increasingly intense, with the arrival of new models that promise to shake up the competition. After the recent impact of vehicles like the BYD Dolphin and the GWM Ora 03, a new player is preparing to enter the scene and could change the rules of the game: the Leapmotor A05, also known as the B03. This electric hatchback, part of the alliance with Stellantis, draws attention for its value proposition, combining advanced autonomous driving technology with a surprisingly low starting price, equivalent to around R$38,000 in China. Its possible arrival in Brazil, driven by the partnership with the automotive giant, could redefine the affordable electric vehicle segment.

Fierce competition in the compact electric car market

The electric compact hatchback segment has seen a wave of launches in recent years. Models like the Geely EX2 have already shaken what was once the domain of a few, and in 2024, new competitors like the MG4 Urban and the GAC Aion UT have joined the fray. This effervescence indicates a growing search for more affordable electric cars with good autonomy, driving automakers to innovate both in technology and pricing strategy. The entry of a model like the Leapmotor A05, with its bold proposal, could further intensify this battle for consumers.

Competitive price and Stellantis’ influence on the market

One of the biggest attractions of the Leapmotor A05 is its market price in China. Starting at 50 thousand yuan, equivalent to approximately R$37,828, the model is positioned as a highly competitive option. This pricing becomes even more relevant considering Leapmotor’s partnership with Stellantis, one of the largest automotive groups in the world. Stellantis not only holds a significant stake in Leapmotor, but also has the exclusive rights to manufacture, export and sell its products outside of China. This strategic alliance suggests that, if the A05 is launched in Brazil, it could benefit from Stellantis’ robust dealer network and market expertise, potentially maintaining a cost-benefit ratio that would make it the cheapest electric car in the country, even if it arrived at double the Chinese price.

Autonomous driving as a standout feature on the Leapmotor A05

Despite the low cost, the Leapmotor A05 does not give up cutting-edge technology. The electric hatchback can be equipped with an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), which includes a LiDAR module discreetly mounted on the roof. This equipment allows the vehicle to perform autonomous driving functions, such as automatic parking and the ability to return to the driver’s pick-up point. On highways, the system can even take full control of the steering, offering a level of automation that is generally found in higher category vehicles. This feature, although not present in the entry-level version, represents a significant difference for the segment and an impressive technological advance for a car in this price range.

Engine, battery and size comparison options with rivals

The Leapmotor A05 offers flexible configurations to meet different performance and range needs. The front electric motor can have outputs of 95 horsepower or 123 horsepower. As for the battery, there are two main options:

  • 40 kWh battery:provides a range of up to 252 kilometers.
  • 53 kWh battery:increases the range to an impressive 510 kilometers.
It is interesting to note that the choice of battery is independent of the engine, allowing, for example, to combine the lower power engine with the higher capacity battery. In terms of dimensions, the A05 is a spacious compact:

  • Length: 4.17 meters
  • Width: 1.79 meters
  • Height: 1.56 meters
  • Wheelbase: 2.60 meters

Compared to the BYD Dolphin GS, one of its main competitors in Brazil, the Leapmotor A05 is slightly larger in some aspects and smaller in others, indicating a similar positioning in the electric hatchback market. The Stellantis model is 5 centimeters longer, 2 centimeters wider, 1 centimeter lower and has a wheelbase 10 centimeters shorter than the Dolphin GS.

Potential for the model to reach the Brazilian market

Even though Stellantis has the rights to sell Leapmotor outside of China, the specific arrival of the A05 in Brazil has not yet been confirmed. However, Stellantis has already announced plans to bring other models from the brand, such as the A10 (B03X) electric compact SUV, from which the A05 is derived. The similarity in design and platform between the two models, together with Stellantis’ expansion strategy in the electric vehicle market, makes the arrival of the A05 a strong possibility. If confirmed, this hatchback could offer Brazilian consumers an innovative, technological and cost-effective option that could significantly change the landscape of electric cars in the country. The market eagerly awaits the next steps of Stellantis and Leapmotor for the American continent.
