Microsoft changes security keys and requires multiple reboots on Windows

For the first time in more than a decade, Microsoft has initiated a major overhaul of Secure Boot keys, the UEFI interface standard that ensures computer boot integrity. This structural change will force users to perform several reboots on their machines to make the changes effective. As the current digital certificate expires in June, the technology giant decided to distribute the correction packages gradually, a process that has been implemented since April.

Deadlines and impacts of credential renewal on the operating system

The digital signature acts as an essential protective barrier, blocking malicious code, such as dangerous bootkits, from executing before the main platform is even loaded. If the equipment does not receive new certification within the stipulated time window, there is a real risk that the device will present serious verification failures and not even turn on. Although the developer initially stated that just one shutdown cycle would be sufficient, recent communications have confirmed that the complexity of the procedure will require the PC to be restarted several times to complete the installation.

Windows 11

Consumers who purchased their computers in the last two years likely won’t notice the impact, as the transition occurs invisibly behind the scenes with modern hardware. On the other hand, older equipment requires extra attention in this scenario, especially those that still run Windows 10. For these machines, the lack of continuous reception of data packets can result in critical vulnerabilities, leaving the system exposed to external threats.

The financial burden of keeping old hardware protected from threats

The big Achilles heel of this structural change lies precisely in the machinery that has been in use for the longest time. Considering that official support for Windows 10 ends in October 2025, the software creator started offering the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for a fee, aiming to extend the useful life of these devices. In practice, this requirement creates a considerable financial dilemma, forcing companies and home users to choose between paying for annual subscriptions or investing in the purchase of a completely new computer compatible with Windows 11.

The strategy of releasing files in batches was designed to avoid overloading global servers and not paralyze daily business operations. Despite this logistical care, professionals who depend on multiple corporate networks or who work with several simultaneous monitors are facing unexpected problems, precisely because of the number of times that the machine requires to be restarted during working hours.

Visual glitches in recent updates hinder the use of multiple monitors

Adding to this transition scenario, specific packages recently released to fix security holes, identified as KB5083769 and KB5082052, brought unforeseen headaches to the public. IT administrators have reported that remote desktop connections have started to display black boxes on the screen, turning crucial information and text into completely unreadable visual blocks.

This display error predominantly affects workstations that use two or more screens operating at different resolutions and zoom scales. Microsoft’s engineering team has already gone public to acknowledge the existence of this technical flaw and assured that a definitive fix is in the development phase, however, the official calendar does not yet indicate an exact date for the launch of this solution.

The need to balance work interruptions and malware defense

To ensure the integrity of stored data, the user has no alternative but to pause their activities and allow the system to complete power cycles. Since the exchange of cryptographic keys was pioneered in the Windows 8 generation, the barrier against intruders has gone up a notch, almost completely eliminating the loophole that allowed cybercriminals to inject viruses directly into the motherboard’s firmware.

Consequently, this dynamic of constant improvement acts as a catalyst that accelerates the obsolescence of past operating systems. Computers that cannot meet the minimum requirements of the most modern versions end up isolated in the market, lose the right to receive continuous investments in long-term support and are unable to access these crucial new layers of cyber defense.

Key considerations for users to monitor during this transition period include the following factors:

  • The original security certificate will lose its validity in approximately six months.
  • GUI crashes were reported after installing packages KB5083769 and KB5082052.
  • Subscribing to the ESU paid program emerges as the only viable route to keeping Windows 10 fully shielded.
  • A definitive patch to correct the display of corrupted texts is already being programmed by the developers.

Preventative measures to avoid crashes during the installation process

The central recommendation for the general public is to access the platform settings and confirm that the automatic download of improvements option is activated. A valuable tip for those dealing with multiple monitors is to temporarily standardize the display scale of all screens before starting to transfer files. Meanwhile, IT managers who manage large fleets of old PCs need to decide urgently whether it is more advantageous to pay for software extensions or start purchasing updated machinery.

As the June deadline approaches on the calendar, the company responsible for the operating system continues to map the instability reports sent by the global community. The technology market’s expectation is that the final fix for unreadable texts in remote desktops will be distributed in the coming weeks, returning the necessary stability to corporate virtual environments.
